I accidentally attached my LCD cable with the battery still attached!

I have a Lenovo 330 15IGM. (I believe it’s the 15IGM, no where on this laptop is there anything more descriptive than Ideapad 330.)

I replaced a broken hinge and display back cover.   The new back cover came with and I used the new WiFi and LCD cables.  I repaired everything fine, however I forgot to disconnect the internal battery!  As I was attaching the LCD cable to the motherboard, it wasn’t straight at first I could smell the dreaded burning plastic/electronics odor.  An obvious short occurred with the continuous voltage on the backlight traces. The LCD cable is visibly toast on the end where the backlight traces are.  I still had the old cable, so cleaned up the motherboard LCD connector and all the contacts appear intact.

I connected that and everything works including the LCD panel, except no backlight!   When I connect to an external display, it all works as well.   (Is there a way to see exactly which Pentium there is in on the motherboard without signing into the laptop.  It’s a customer laptop.)

It seems likely that I blew a fuse or fuses on the motherboard itself, but is there a possibility that I damaged the backlight in the display itself?  I would think the damage is likely in the motherboard.

My dilemma is should I replace the motherboard, or the LCD panel first? (Of if I could solder new fuses on if it’s obvious where they are and I can order them just as fast.)

Here’s a photo showing the top case having damage for one hinge screw as well, so opening is fine, but closing, the motherboard itself will put a little force on the hinge closing:

There IS continuity across F2. So that’s likely not the issue?

gatortpk the way it happened leads me to at least a blown fuse. I would not suspect the backlight in the LCD display as having failed. Looks like fuse F2 is in charge of the backlight. Take a look at it and measure for continuity. Post some good pictures of your complete board (both sides) with your question so we can assist you with the fuses.

Update (12/10/2021)

We would have to see if there is power on the backlight circuit. Measure it on the connector and then work your way backwards by components. Let us know what you find on the display connector first. Here are the schematics for your motherboard NM B661 EG431 EG532 MB V10 20180302 Lenovo IdeaPad 330 14IGM yes it is 15IGM ;-)

I added some photos and tested F2 for continuity. There is continuity access F2. Any other ideas?

Just adding if there is +ledvdd voltage on pins 1 & 2 of the motherboard eDP cable connector check for a voltage on pin 14.

Not sure re your panel but a lot of LCD panels require ~3.3V DC on the dispoff# lead to turn the backlights on.

The voltage is removed to turn the backlights off e.g. when the lid is closed etc.

There is ALWAYS +ledvdd voltage supplied to the panel. The backlights are turned on and off in the panel depending on the condition of the dispoff# lead.

If you get the voltage on pin 14 then you may have to check the cable for continuity between the motherboard and the panel.
