Keyboard and trackpad failed after battery replacement
Today I replaced the battery in my MacBook Pro 2015, following the excellent iFixIt guide (though not using an iFixIt kit as I can’t buy that where I live). It started up perfectly afterwards (so the battery is working), but the trackpad and keyboard aren’t working.
This seems to be a common problem, with many suggesting a damaged trackpad cable. However, my problem is a bit weird. First thing I noticed is that the trackpad, which has a “fake” clicker, makes a click sound when a press it when the mac is on, though with no input on the Mac.
Secondly, various people recommend resetting NVRAM and SMC. Obviously I assumed this would require an external keyboard, so I connected one and successfully reset the NVRAM (at least, I got the power on sound three times). However, I couldn’t reset the SMC with the external keyboard, so I tried the builtin keyboard… and it worked. The Mac remained off as it was supposed to until I let go and pressed the power button again. I tried resetting the NVRAM using the builtin keyboard, but that didn’t work.
To summarise, the trackpad clicker works, though the trackpad doesn’t. The power button works all the time. The keyboard seems to provide some input while the Mac is off but not when it’s on.
Any suggestions as to how to fix this? Is it likely to be the ribbon cable, given that some things still work?
