I have a MacBook Pro 13 Touchbar A1706 EMC3163, mid 2017 model with a number of (probably liquid spill related) issues:

It started booting very slowly and as soon as the OS boots up, the fans are running at full speed and the MacBook is very slow, almost unresponsive. (Safe mode to protect the system???) One by one the keyboard and later the trackpad died.

PRAM and SMC reset are no longer possible (because of the broken keyboard). I did, however, drain the battery completely, which should work as an SMC reset (and didn't help).

When booting in diagnostic mode, it shows a problem with the System Management Controller (code: PFM006) and a problem with the Power Management System (code: PPN001).

I would like to fix it by buying a donor Macbook, and I hope to fix my Macbook by replacing the logic board and probably the keyboard and trackpad. Since I'm not familiar with Apple products, I'd like to get feedback on whether this is doable (if there are any particular challenges) and whether my assessment that the logic board is defective is correct.

I greatly appreciate your comments and help,
Thanks,
Felix

Additional information:

The battery works fine and powers the computer for several hours,
the currently installed operating system is Monterey

Hi

At the moment it’s sounding like it could be spill related as you have already said

Let’s try and confirm this,if you could open the MacBook apart using this guide

MacBook Pro 13" Touch Bar Late 2016 Lower Case Replacement

And upload some photos on the inside using this guide

Adding images to an existing question

that will help us get a better idea of what’s going on :-)

Thanks:-)

Thanks for your reply.

I'll try to open the MacBook tonight and upload pictures :)

@fritzpeppone - even before you open the system how about running the onboard diagnostics to see if an error pops. Restart your system and press the D key to enter.

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

@danj That's exactly what I did and described above:

"When booting in diagnostic mode, it shows a problem with the System Management Controller (code: PFM006) and a problem with the Power Management System (code: PPN001)."

@hellomacos I just opened the MacBook and uploaded some pictures. At first glance I don't notice anything out of the ordinary. No corrosion, no obviously defective chips/components. One of the batteries looks slightly bloated thought...

@fritzpeppone - The SMC error is just a reflection of the true error which is within the power management logic within your logic board.

This is likely a damaged component or corrosion damage on the logic board (of course the side you can’t see from the bottom)

I think it’s wise to find someone with Mac logic board repair experience to help you here.

I've retired loads with this problem and 90% its the trackpad , which is a cheap and easy fix ( just be careful with the washers )
