Does anyone have a firmware dump of this Mac? I’d like to reflash it.

Hello. I have an early 2005 Mac mini and in spite of looking around everywhere I have yet to see a firmware dump of this model. Does 10.5 update the firmware? My revision is 4.8.9f and I’d be interested in getting a program or OS X to reflash it so it doesn’t loose the copy after age and electron migration have taken their toll. It works great right now and I hope to keep it that way.

Unless you are planning a trip past the Van Allen belts you’re not likely to get hit by ionization radiation (cosmic radiation) which is what damages EEROM’s.

I doubt you can find the PowerPC firmware BIN, even still we have a bit of a chicken and egg problem as you would need a working system to run the firmware updater, but if it’s corrupted the system won’t boot up! So you would then need a ROM burner and the hardware to connect the chip (desoldering it maybe needed).

If this is important to you I would find a spare system.

The mini works great. I just want to keep it that way. I don’t know how much you follow vintage hardware but these serial flash rom chips suffer permanent erasure after a period of time. It’s actually a problem with all flash storage. The rom inside the mini is not an EEPROM or else the question wouldn’t matter.

@joshj88 - Sorry it is an EEROM check the chips P/N. The space people get messed up is the chip also offers a RAM space as well which holds your settings (PRAM) this space is dependent on the trickle voltage from the small battery Mac mini (PowerPC) PRAM Battery Replacement so if you leave the system unpowered the PRAM battery can die and that is what you face with a system which won’t boot up. Replacing the battery and doing a hard reset fixes things.

Given the age of your system I’m sure the battery is passed it’s lifespan.
