The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet (3rd Gen) is a 13-inch laptop computer that can switch between tablet, laptop, and canvas, like a Microsoft Surface Pro.

Why is the Fingerprint reader not working reliably?

Using Windows 10 the finger print reader would sometimes denied to work to log me into the machine. Windows 10 Login Screen reacted by telling me that it could not regocnize my finger print. Switching to Windows 11 I was happy to find out the finger print reader was more accurate. But after a while the finger print reader denies all functionality. The Windows 11 Login Screen simply does nothing after resting my finger on the finger print reader. Not even a response like the Windows 10 Login Screen. Simply no reaction. Is the device broken?

Hi @drproton

Try using a Q-Tip lightly moistened (not dripping) with Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available from electronics parts stores) to gently clean the sensor window of any grease, perspiration etc left by your finger, allow it time to dry and then check if that resolves the problem.

I suggested only lightly moistened as you don't want any liquid to penetrate through to the internal components via any gaps next to the sensor window. Also to forestall and minimize any possible damage, do this with the laptop turned off. It would be preferable to also have the laptop battery disconnected as well but as long as you don't apply too much liquid it should be OK as IPA 99%+ evaporates quickly and leaves no residues.

Here's the ifixit Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet (3rd Gen) Unboxing Teardown that will help, if you do decide to disconnect the battery.

Also check in Device Manager, that you have the latest driver -V5.5.44.1058 14 Apr 2022 installed for the fingerprint reader (click on Select Additional OS > Win 11 64-bit) to get the download file.

To get to Device Manager in Win 11 to view the driver version that is already installed, press the Win key + x key (both together) and click on the Device Manager link.

When in Device Manager go to Biometric Devices > right click on the Synaptics entry > Properties > Driver

Thanks. I will try the driver. Altough the driver version is the same, the Lenovo on ist two months younger. I tried cleaning the reader, but this does not helped. The thing is, more or les sit is working, but sometime not. That is disappointing, because it is not reliable.

Thanks for your help.

@drproton

Try uninstalling the reader in Device Manager and then restarting the laptop and let Windows reinstall it and check how it works.

Go to Device Manager > Biometrics > right click Synaptics device > Uninstall Device and follow the prompts

Do any of the USB controllers in Device Manager have a yellow exclamation mark next to them by any chance?

Worst case scenario is that it is an intermittently faulty fingerprint reader or perhaps a loose reader cable connection.

Here the hardware maintenance manual for the laptop. Go to p.72 to view the procedure to remove the reader.

If you decide to try replacing the reader, there are two interchangeable readers available for the model - part # 00HW566 and 00HW565.

Search online using the "part number only" to find suppliers that suit you best
