Home button and charger not working after fall.

Having had my 3gs dropped, neither the home button or the charger are now working. Battery now drained so it would appear having that repaired first is a priority. I could suffer the home button work-around of locking the phone with a pass code but it's imperative that I get it charged first. What can you suggest? I'm considering opening it up first to see if there is any visible damage or loosened connectors.

Thanks in advance.

hi,

thanks for the contribution. i opened the phone and noticed that the connector for the dock connector became detached. i reattached it and it's now powering up fine and the home button also works. unfortunately for me in my haste to detach the screen i damaged the proximity sensor (cable 3). So my question is now how easy is the sensor to replace. I'm not the heavy handed type but obviously more care should have been taken. the cable 3 is obscured by cable 2. All viewers please learn from my mistake. Note am pretty sure the sensor cable is not damaged on the board. Thats a comment for anyone offering advice for its replacement.

This is a top class site with top class advice and instructions.

Dock connector for sure. The home button plugs into the dock connector. That would explain why both the home button and the charging isn't working. I've replaced my dock connector on my iPhone 4 and it now works great.

I had the same problem with a iPhone 3g. I bought a dock assembly from ebay and it was damaged during shipping. The seller said they would send me a new one. While I was waiting yesterday I opened the iPhone for the first time. Same as you the ribbon cable to the dock connector was detached. I also see how easy it is to mess up an iPhone by opening it. I took the sim out and the 2 screws on the bottom. Put the suction cup just above the home button and barely pulled up. It almost flew apart in pieces. Lucky I had my hands on it in a way that it would not fly apart.

Now mine works like new. Glad to hear yours it working now too. Now that I think about it I bet the ribbon cable on the dock assembly comes off really easy. I let my g/f borrow mine for a few months and thought it was something she did. I don't think it was. I remember it was having a hard time charging and the connector on the bottom where the usb cable plugs into the iPhone was dirty. I blew it out with compressed air and that probably put an end to the home button, charging and the other crap.

I bet a lot of folks out there have disconnected that ribbon cable by blowing it out with air duster, compressed air or even blowing really hard into it. When I connected the cable again it fell off really easy until I pressed really firmly down on it.
