Screen not working after liquid damage

Hi - My wife spilled a drink on her 2018 MBP. She said it went between the screen and the keyboard. She let it dry for several days and we tried to turn it back on. The only thing not working is the screen. I was able to plug it into an external display and it worked fine.

Based on some basic research, I tried replacing the logic board. That did not resolve the issue. I believe the old logic board is fine. I see no evidence of corrosion. I'm not experienced in working on the circuitry of the boards but have replaced larger components on computers and other electronics before.

At this point should I expect that the whole screen is fried, and need to replace the screen? Or is it possible that it's just one of the ribbon cables or the LED board? Would love to hear suggestions or insights from anyone knowledgable on this....

Hi @nateanders59444,

Don't know Mac but assume it would be similar to a PC as far as how the screen works.

With the laptop turned on etc, try shining a flashlight at an angle close to the laptop's screen (with the display switched back to the laptop away from the external monitor) and check if there are any images to be seen on the screen.

They will be very faint if they are there so trying this in a darkened room may help to see them if they are there.

If there are images, its a backlight (LED) problem. Whether in the display or the LED board (if a separate board) would need to be determined. (If the LED board is a separate board perhaps check the power supplied by the board to the LEDs is OK - blown fuse or power IC on the board?).

If there are no images and since there is no backlight and also as you have replaced the logic board it seems to be the screen or maybe the screen and the LED board if it is a separate board.
