Why does my NEW Laptop keep Randomly restarting?

My new laptop likes to restart randomly. I get no errors when it does, when it's on the login it will randomly restart same as when I'm just surfing the web. Now when I am surfing the web, the laptop doesn't get hot. it's relatively cool. the only real times that it doesn't restart is when I am gaming (war thunder).

Seems new enough that I would expect it is still under warranty. Have you considered having it checked by a dealer that's authorized to do warranty repairs?

possible. But i cannot return it to amazon. wont let me. and idk if MSI will do repairs as its under warranty from them. one of the warranty invalidations is that it cannot be from a 3 party seller. I have also checked online and it came to about 3 or 4 solutions. 1. might be that the RAM is causing an issue. 2. it over heats.(i got a cooling dock incase it does). 3. something is wrong with the powercable or something with the battery. 4. bios update/revert ( i have no idea on how to mess with the bios. so i wouldn't mess with it).

Hi @kaosemeralds,

If you haven't already done so (I'm not sure when you say "no errors"), check in Event Viewer for any Critical, Error or Warning events that are logged at the time that the laptop restarts.

If there are any or you notice a pattern of same type events, search online using the Event ID and Source to find out what it means and what the cause(s) may be.

To get to Event Viewer in Win 11, press the Win key + x key (both together) and click on the link.

Also run an sfc /scannow command in a Command (run as admin) window, to make sure the system files are all OK. Note: There is a space between the sfc and the / symbol

Type cmd in the search box on the desktop and click on the Command (run as administrator) link

SFC command OK, you never said?

Download, install and run this free memory test program and check what it shows.

Random makes it harder so you may have to be patient as you haven't said how often it happens but try starting and using the OS in "safe mode with networking" and check if it restarts or not. Not good for gaming as the video is very basic. Also WiFi doesn't work in safe mode, only Ethernet

If it works OK then there's a driver problem.

Have you checked if all the drivers are the latest version, you never said? What is the model number of the motherboard?

If your new laptop is restarting randomly, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue. First, ensure that your laptop's operating system and drivers are up to date. Outdated software can sometimes cause instability. Run a thorough antivirus scan to check for malware that might be triggering the restarts.

Check the Event Viewer in Windows for any error messages around the times when your laptop restarts. This could provide valuable clues about the underlying problem. Additionally, monitor your laptop's temperature using software. Even if it feels cool, excessive heat can still lead to crashes. Running a memory test can help identify any issues with your laptop's RAM that might be contributing to the restarts.

Review your laptop's power settings to rule out any settings causing unexpected shutdowns. If your laptop allows for overclocking, consider reverting to default settings, as overclocking can sometimes lead to instability. Uninstall any recently added software to check if conflicts might be causing the random restarts. If none of these steps resolve the issue, consider reaching out to MSI's customer support for further assistance, especially if your laptop is still under warranty. Remember to back up your important data before attempting any major changes to your system.
