ASUS ROG laptop battery issue

asus rog gu501gm, windows 10

The old battery died, classic signs of battery death, so i bought a new-old one (oem asus but used and 'tested').

this one has a different issue... it works, and reads correctly, showing me the actual capacity, the actual % charged, the actual time remaining to charge, and works whether the ac is plugged in or not. it seems right, charges and discharges just fine.

but then SOMETIMES when i turn the laptop on... it says 0%, plugged in, charging, and just never charges. and SOMETIMES, the batteryreport reads a lower capacity than it actually has.

but upon draining the power by pressing the power button for 40 seconds, and restarting - or deleting the battery/ac drivers in device manager and letting bios reinstall them - it works normally again. until the next restart.

i know this battery could be bad too.... but before buying another one, what do i do next to verify that vs other battery components?

@mira42b something like this "and just never charges. and SOMETIMES, the batteryreport reads a lower capacity than it actually " can be an issue with the battery control board. It can also be an issue with the battery connections on your motherboard. Make sure that those are all clean, no corrosion and/ or bend , broken pins etc.

IF all of that looks good, I would start off with a new battery. IF that is a no go, you will need to try and identify the motherboard and check for schematics and boardview to trace the charging circuit.

there is a tiny bit of plastic on the connector that is broken... but i kind of didn't think that would be the issue because of how it works again after resetting the drivers or bios, without touching the connector again physically, and stops working only upon restart after working totally fine for hours and hours. BUT, i know hardware can be weird like that... i'm gonna open it up and do a closer inspection again.

@mira42b you can always post some pictures of that connector etc. with your question. That way we can see what you see.
