Controller buttons not working, possible milk from a bottle help

I laid my sons steamdeck on the bed next to where I was feeding his newborn baby. When I set it down it was working fine. Hours later when I went to play it agai none of the controller buttons would work. Screen works, power button works, volume buttons work. I thought maybe it was because it was almost dead so i plugged it in. Later tried it again and still controller buttons would not work. My So. then looked up controller connection and no controller was found. He did a restart and then did a manufacturer reset and still controller buttons would not work. While he was looking at it he said there appeared to have been a little moisture around the abox buttons, very little and smelled like baby formula so possibly some milk dripped on it and I did not realize it.

I went ahead and bought him a new steamdeck but I was having fun playing it so after spending $430.00 on a new one for him I would like to see if I can repair this one for myself. At no point was milk dumped dumped on it or but possibly some drips from bottle as I was tending the newborn.

No need to tell me woulda, coulda, shoulda comments. I know it should have been turned off immediatly then did some research. If you can help this Nana out it would be appreciated.

I have never disassembled a Steamdeck, so if it were mine, I would find a disassembly video on YouTube and get started. Once it is opened up remove the battery connector and inspect the switches and see if you can open them up and rinse out the milk. If not, maybe you can replace them. You may also be able to just slosh the switches around in warm clean water to disolve the milk and flush it out. Just make sure you don't reconnect the battery until it is COMPLETELY dry.

We used to wash electronic equipment in a dishwasher at the repair shop, then bake them for 24 hours in a heat chamber (not an oven). So, it can take the water as long as there is no power.

In addition to Bill's answer, I'd take a look at the information on iFixit's Wiki on Electronic's Water Damage page, and use iFixit's motherboard replacement page to get to the motherboard. The PH of baby formula is around 5.75, which isn't the worst thing that could be spilled onto an electronic, but shouldn't be left, and should be cleaned as soon as possible.
