Problems with Ubuntu and Ralink RT3290LE 802.11bgn 1x1. Wi-Fi and BT

Hi, I have an old Hp Pavilion n029la, after issues with Windows I am running Ubuntu to give it a 2nd life. The issue is, that Ubuntu and the network adapter don't get along and I would like to replace it with a more compatible network adapter, which should also be compatible with the BIOS. I am looking either for suitable replacements that I can purchase, or the user manual for this laptop. I would appreciate any guidance from you guys.

Is the WLAN card the one that came with the laptop or a replacement?

What is the product number shown on the product information label on the bottom of the laptop?

The specifications for a HP Pavilion14-n029la show that the product number is E2C21LA (there's also E2C21LAR) and the parts list for them show it had a Mediatek MT7630E 802.11bgn WLAN/BT module, not a Ralink.

Perhaps you could try using the Mediatek MT7630E 802.11bgn adapter (p/n 710418-001) as mentioned above or search HP Partsurfer with the product number of your laptop to see what was the originally supplied one if it has been changed.

Hi Jayjeff,

I really appreciate your feedback. My PN is the first one. What you mentioned about the part from the part list (which is what I've been looking for) is what I need. I find it weird though, because I do not recall having to change (over the years) this network adapter, although I can't rule out I changed, or had my laptop serviced 10 years ago. I will definitely try and find the Mediatek adapter en let you know how this goes.

Network adapters are small PCBs and have differing form and fit depending on the PC.

They can usually be upgraded as long as the upgrade has the same form and fit.

This might be your service manual

Hi Bill,

thanks for your reply. Yeap, the problem with this particular network adapter, is its reliability when using linux based systems. Therefore I either need to replace it with another one which is compatible with linux, or, and I think this is the more straightforward solution, buy an usb wifi adapter.

The problem with replacing it with another network adapter (PCB style), is, the BIOS is compatible with a handful of network adapters (whitelist), so because I do not have this compatibility list, and I end up buying the wrong one (which physically could look similar to the native one), It could end up not working. As for the manual, thanks for the effort, but my laptop is from the 2013's and a 14". I think I downloaded it some years ago, but can't find It among my personal files.
