Lenovo ideapad laptop not starting up, showing blank display

Whenever I turn the laptop on, the screen is on but shows nothing, and the fans also doing (not mad but still spin) I tried f2, f8 and f12 but nothing works. Is their a way to fix the laptop, or at least get my data back?

UPDATE:

The screen is fine. The problem is a corrupted windows, which won't display anything. I just backed up the data on the m.2 ssd, and am going to install Windows on it soon. Thanks jayeff for his help, but again, the screen is fine.

@mcoolbhai how did you determine that the screen is fine? Do you get the splashscreen when you turn your computer on? Can you access your BIOS?

@oldturkey03 the screen is fine since I can see the backlight is on when on blank display and yes, I can access bios/uefi

Hi @mcoolbhai

Try connecting an external monitor (TV?) to the laptop's HDMI port and check if there's a display from the laptop showing on it. Don't forget to press the change display function key (or Fn + change display function key) to change the display from the laptop to the external monitor.

If there is a display showing on the external monitor:

Restart the laptop in the normal manner and then when it starts again, quickly press the F2 key repeatedly to see if you can get into BIOS with a display showing on the laptop screen.

If there's no display in BIOS (you can't view BIOS on an external monitor), then given you said that the laptop screen "....is on but shows nothing,..." which I assume to mean that it lightens up i.e. not dark like when it is off, but no images (is this correct?) it looks like the LCD panel in the laptop may be faulty.

Here's the hardware maintenance manual for the laptop. Go to p.44 (50 of 82 pdf) to view the procedure to remove/replace the LCD panel.

If the laptop screen doesn't change from dark to lighter colour (still no images) i.e. it is not on then there may be a backlight problem with the display.

Try shining a flashlight at an angle close to the screen and check if you can see any images at all when the laptop is on. They will be very faint if they are there, so trying this in a darkened room may help to see them.

If you can't see any images then the problem may be a faulty LCD panel or a faulty EDP (video) cable between the motherboard and the LCD panel.the LCD panel

If you can see images, then there's a backlight problem with the display. This could be due to a faulty backlight power supply on the motherboard, a loose EDP cable connection between the motherboard and the LCD panel (either end) or a faulty LCD panel. Further testing using the schematics for the motherboard would be needed to determine where the problem is.

If it is determined that the LCD panel is the problem, usually the Lenovo part number for the LCD panel can be found somewhere on the back of the panel itself. Search online for the part number only, to find suppliers that suit you best.

If there is no display showing on the external monitor: perhaps the laptop is not even starting correctly.

Try a power refresh and check if that resolves the problem.

  • Turn off the laptop if on and disconnect the charger if it is connected. Open the laptop and disconnect the battery from the motherboard. You don't have to remove the battery just disconnect it. Go to p.35 (41 of 82 pdf) of the manual to view the procedure to disconnect the battery.
  • Press and hold the laptop's Power button for a full 30 seconds and then release it.
  • Reconnect the battery, reassemble the laptop, connect the charger and turn on the laptop and check if it now works OK.

If all the above fails to determine why there's no laptop display you can remove the SSD from the laptop (see p.36 (42 of 82) of the manual and then connect the SSD to another PC's USB port, via an M2.NVME to USB adapter (examples only) to retrieve your data etc.
