I am working as a tinkerer/tech writer. I help write and correct the tear downs and the repair manuals that help us all keep our gadgets running longer and cheaper! I also have the occasional opportunity to do some CAD (computer aided design) work for various tools, bits, pieces and gadgets!
Actually not necessarily...my experience delving into gadgets, while existent, is likely less than that of the average geek. I built computers in my younger days with my dad and do occasional laptop repairs and circuit board solder jobs, but my specialty lies mainly in fixing my motorcycle, car/truck and my R/C models. These three fixing categories allow my handy experience to pass through assembly of large and small components, use of specialty tools (torque wrenches, calipers etc), electrical circuit diagnostics, lots of soldering and tons of trouble shooting. Being able to trace a problem to it's source is always step 1 in repair!
Graduating Cal Poly opened up many hours of free time, which I have happily filled again working to help teach the world to repair. But the free time that I haven't absorbed into my work is primarily split into 3 major categories; motorcycles, music and RC Models!
I started riding motorcycles spring of '09. My first bike was a beat up old 1992 GSX-R 750. This bike had character. There was no part on it unscathed by some sort of crash or accident, but it was an awesome bike. It took me from the basics of how to go in a straight line, all the way to my 3rd track day in B-group. On top of learning to ride, this bike forced me to learn how to fix too! This bike went through 1 engine, 1 transmission in the "new" engine, many electrical bugs, brake bleeds, brake pads, valve adjusts and carburetor tunes. All these I had to perform myself because I couldn't afford for a shop to do it (and because the one shop I did allow to touch my bike did the fix WRONG...but that's another story). Sadly though that bike is gone, I had to sell it. In it's place is a 1993 Ninja 500 street fighter. While the Ninja is not the beast that my GSX-R was, it is still a fun reliable machine that I am able to use my learned repair skills on!
No, but seriously...music is a big part of my life and I am indeed a proud band geek; certified, notarized and stamped! Note the picture; that's right, I'm rocking the sun glasses at night with no hint of shame! My primary instrument of destruction is the trombone with my primary style being jazz. I personally prefer to play latin-jazz and swing but there is still no better sound than being in Cal Poly's pep band surrounded by my low-brass-brethren. But my music extends beyond sitting and reading music. I've also enjoyed composing my own songs on piano and in synth programs, such as Fruity Loops, and have even made a piano arrangement of the Halo 3 Title Theme. With any luck I may one day have the opportunity to arrange songs for the Mustang Band!
The RC models I play with aren't you're typical Tyco remote control cars. These are the high end models. For example my truck could hit 60+ mph with the right battery, I have a plane capable of 100+ mph, had a helicopter capable of hovering upside down and I had a plane powerful enough to hover! Experiences with my vehicles have allowed me to fly, drive and fix almost any hobby-class RC model. There is nothing better than getting to play and tinker with the same thing!

ОтветыHow to replace/reconnect display cable? It appears that the connector shown in this guide step is the you would want to inspect. Follow the guide up to the step linked above and you will be able to at least inspect the connector. Replacing the screen may take some exploration. Hope this helps and good luck.
ОтветыHow can you tell how many GB's are on a 3G MotherboardCheck out step 25 of our teardown. The picture there is of the memory. If you can locate that chip and enter the numbers on the IC into a search you should be able to identify the IC and find out its memory.
ОтветыWhy cant I hear bass & sound from one of the speakers? You have multiple places to look: 1: Speaker wire. I've had micro-rips in my speaker wires from my kitten chewing on them. Inspect them closely to see if that may be your case. If it is, cut the wires, strip them, solder them back together, and insulate them with shrink tube or electrical tape. 2: Disconnect at the speaker. See if you can open your speaker up and inspect the connection on the speakers. Re-solder if necessary. 3: Main Board. Vibrations may have damaged components on the main board. If you can access the board, inspect it for any visual breaks in solder connections. If those all check out, try to see if you can identify any of the ICs. If you can find specs on the ICs you may be able to test them with a multi-meter to see if they match specs. If nothing else, tracing with a voltmeter can tell you where there's a power disconnect. 4: Also an option, if you have a wired speaker remote (like many of the Logitech speakers), there may be damage in the controller. Inspect it in the same manner as the ...
Ответыdropped iPhone 4 in water!I would first read through our electronics water damage wiki. This will help prevent further damage to your phone. Use our guides to help you take the phone apart for cleaning and inspection. If the screen still looks odd after you've cleaned everything you may unfortunately have a damaged screen and will need to replace it. We carry the display assembly here, but hopefully cleaning things up the rest of the way will fix your issue! Good luck.
Ответыcell phone housing cost, manufacturers..Odds of getting any manufacturer's cost is slim. You also have to take into account that cost varies greatly depending on complexity/geometry of the casing, casing material, quantity ordered, and of course variations in price from manufacturer to manufacturer. If you want a true measure of manufacturing cost, I would suggest you get a 3D CAD model of your desired design and send it to a manufacturing firm with your desired material and quantities. Most companies will be able to quote you a price per unit or batch and a lead time.
ОтветыMemory for Amazon kindle FireThe memory of the Kindle Fire is in the form of a small IC. You could theoretically purchase a larger chip and install it but these are not plug and play components. You would need a chip with the same pin out/dimensions and the same operating "architecture" as the original. Unless you have extensive knowledge of the inner workings of the current chip and the one you look to purchase as well as special equipment to safely solder these components w/o causing damage.
ОтветыWont turn on at allMy two guesses are dead battery (possibly finished off by being off for several months) or fried "other component" due to water damage. While the water may not have caused an immediate short, the water may have caused corrosion which built up in the time the phone was inactive. My suggestion would be to open the phone and due a visual inspection to see if anything is noticeably damaged. If all looks ok, try replacing the battery first. Let us know what you find.
Ответыlower buttons do not respondThis could be a case of a bad digitizer or just an improperly seated cable. Confirm that this issue is consistent in any app. If the issue is consistent, check the digitizer cable and socket for damage or debris. Re-seat the connector and see if re-seating (and/or cleaning) fixed the issue. If not the issue may be a bad digitizer. Hope this helps and let us know what happens.
ОтветыHow to undisable my iPod?Similar problems can be spotted through out our community, like My iPod is disabled for 21,910,882 minutes what do I do?. The consistent answer to this issue is to put the iPod into DFU mode and restore it (see the link in the answer provided). You will lose all the data on your iPod, but you should be able to recover system functionality.
ОтветыWont turn on or chargeThe dock connector would be a good place to start. If the dock connector isn't working the battery won't charge and of course won't connect to the computer. Try replacing that first. If still no luck, try replacing the battery. Alternatively you can test the battery with a multimeter by measuring the voltage. Let us know what you find. Also, you should tell us specifically which iPhone you are working with so we can help as best as we can.
