Dell Latitude 5401 Not Powering On

Is your Dell Latitude 5401 refusing to power on/respond when the power button is pressed? Use this troubleshooting guide to help diagnose why.

Batteries can naturally over time degrade and lose functionality.

• Remove the battery from the laptop. Then plug in the charger and try booting up the laptop solely off of the charger.
• If the laptop powers on without the battery but while plugged in. Replace the battery.

While powering on, a computer’s BIOS/OS can encounter an error leading to the computer being unable to turn on or getting stuck in a bootloop. Lights and display may turn on briefly before turning back off.

• Hold F12 key when dell logo appears, this will open the diagnostics options. Navigate through the menu and run a diagnostic test, this will give you an error code that you can use to further diagnose the problem or contact dell with the error code for assistance. The diagnostics screen also has options to back up local files or factory reset your device.

If the device still fails to power on you may need to manually test the RAM sticks

• Remove the RAM sticks from the laptop..
• Insert one RAM stick into the first slot.
• Try to boot the laptop. If it works, the stick is likely good.
• Repeat this process with the same stick in the other slot, and then with the second stick(if you have one), to isolate which component (stick or slot) is failing.
• If neither of the slots work with the RAM. Replace the RAM stick.

A faulty SSD can cause the device to also fail to correctly power on. If your device is powering on but not booting. It is possible you may still see the logo on the screen.

• Remove and place the SSD.

A faulty wireless or Bluetooth card can prevent a laptop from powering on by creating a short circuit, preventing the POST (Power-On Self-Test) process. In this case your screen may be on but still failing to boot without show the logo.

• Remove and replace the Wifi/Bluetooth Connector.
