Lenovo ThinkPad S431 Troubleshooting
ThinkPad will not turn on
The laptop screen remains black or shows no sign of turning on.
Check to see if you have a working adapter. If you plug in your adapter and your light turns on, it is working. If your laptop is still not responding, or will only respond with the adapter plugged in, replacement will be necessary. Follow this guide to see how to replace your battery safely.
You will need to replace your adapter if you plug it in and no light shows. Make sure you buy a new adapter compatible with your laptop. The 20V Adapter is the one made for Lenovo ThinkPad S431. Other adapters can harm your computer
Fan is obnoxiously loud.
One possibility for a noisy fan can be that it is clogged with dust and lint. You will need to clean it. You can buy a compressed air duster. Spray down the vent to clear any trapped dust in your device.
If you have a clean fan your laptop may be overheating. Signs your laptop is overheating are: random error messages popping up, system freezing, or your laptop shuts down randomly. The proper temperature for your laptop is 50 degrees Celsius or 122 degrees Fahrenheit. To prevent your laptop from overheating, make sure you have your laptop in a cool area, allow more air flow in by elevating your laptop and avoid setting it down on thick surfaces like blankets as this will block the fan. Get a program that will help keep track of your temperature level, and consider spending less time on your laptop.
If your laptop isn't overheating, and you have a clean fan then you will need to replace it. Follow this guide to see how to remove your fan safely.

Missing or broken keys

Keys cannot be pressed. Make sure that area underneath and around the key is clean. To clean under a key, remove the key and make sure nothing is stuck below it. You may need to wipe off the area underneath. Once it is sufficiently clean, put the removed key back into its position.
One or more keys fail to respond. The entire keyboard assembly needs to be replaced.
The laptop has no sound
You have difficulty listening to sounds on the computer.
If the laptop has no sound when trying to listen through its speakers, there may be corrupt audio drivers. Search for Lenovo ThinkPad S431. Select “Lenovo ThinkPad S431,” then choose “Drivers and Software.” Select the “Audio” tab, go through the available list of drivers and download the recommended driver. Go to the Control Panel -> Device Manager -> Sound Controllers. Select the sound card by clicking on it and click on “Update driver.” Run the installation to completion by following the prompts. Choose the updated driver, and finally, restart the computer so as to update the changes in the audio driver.
Loose Headphone Jack
Test the audio using the computer speakers, thereafter, connect headphones to the laptop using the jack pin and test the sound as well. If the audio is working with the headphones and is not working without the headphones, the laptop speakers may be faulty or the laptop speakers may have been muted or the driver disabled. To check whether the laptop speakers have been muted or the audio driver has been disabled. Search for the sound control tab from the control panel. Right click on the “Speakers”. Click enable or unmute so as to play the audio. In case this is not the case. The laptop speakers may be faulty and could need a replacement.
Touchpad Is Not Working

Try to restart the device. If that does not help, consider purchasing a touchpad and replace it using this guide.
The USB Jack Cannot Recognize Devices
If the USB is not reading it could be that there is dust stuck in the ports. Clean out the dust with an air cleaner and try again.
If the USB is plugged into the USB port and it is still not reading there may be a problem with the software. Use https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutio... for how to update your USB software.
