Ryobi P271 Troubleshooting

The battery is not charging so the power drill will not turn on.

Make sure you properly center the battery then push it in enough for you to hear a click. If the battery is in all the way and the drill still wont power on, you may need to purchase a new battery.

If you already ensured that the battery is properly inserted and the drill still doesn't work, try putting the same battery on another drill to be certain that the problem is with the drill and not the battery itself. If the battery is still having trouble, a possible underlying cause may be the internal wiring. In order to fix this problem  you will be required to open up the battery itself by removing the screws. From there, look for loose of broken wiring. Anything that may look unnatural to the battery may be the cause of your problem.

The drill bit holder is not properly holding the drill bit.

You can adjust the tightness of the drill bit holder by turning the chuck.Turning the chuck right will tighten the clamps while turning them left will loosen them. Make sure your clamps are adjusted properly so that it may fit your drill bit.

Try to make sure to keep the drill bit holder clean and completely empty before use. Broken pieces of steel or dirt may be in the holder itself so be sure it is completely clean so that the drill bit may go in properly. If the drill bit is empty but either still wont full clamp or fit the drill bit then you can try to use a different drill bit to ensure the problem is with the drill itself. When you squeeze the trigger the motor doesn't seem to be responding so the drill wont function.

If the trigger is jammed internally you will have to open the drill and find the obstruction and remove it. You can open it by unscrewing the screws that run along the entire drill.

There might be a problem with the wiring within the drill so you will have to unscrew and open it so that you may either try to re-link the connection from the trigger to the motor. If the trigger remains broken after you re-link the wires then you will have to replace it by opening the drill removing the trigger and  exchanging it for a new trigger.

The magnet hold the screws not currently in use all together and helps hold the screw in use in place.

If the magnet is on the wrong side it might've been placed incorrectly when the drill was being put together. Try finding different objects that generally stick to magnets and see if they stick or not. If it doesn't work with that side try unscrewing the drill so that you may remove and flip the magnet so that is on the correct side.

If the magnet itself is missing it will need to be replaced. Unscrew the screws on the drill to open it up and replace the magnet holder with a new magnet for the drill.

The reverse switch on the drill can hinder the user greatly. If the user makes a mistake it will be very difficult, almost impossible, to reverse that mistake. Also if the user wishes to take something apart held together by screws they would not be able to.

A solution to solving this problem can be to remove and replace the switch by unscrewing the screws on the drill to see if the switch is jammed or caught on something. If so remove the obstruction and place drill back together.

If the reverse switch is jammed externally due to a sticky mess or an obstruction, simply remove the obstruction or clean away the sticky substance to the best of your ability using a minimal amount of damaging liquids. If neither of these problems are relevant then you may have to replace the switch.
