ok so the ylod is cause by an overheating issue. the fix is called a re-flow. weather you do it or Sony does it. it can last 2 days, 2 weeks, 2 yr.... you just don't know(i've done many fixes all ps3 i've done still run great). best thing to do is make sure your ps3 stays clean inside for proper airflow. don't use canned air. i use an air compressor but u have to be carefully when doing so(make sure there is NO moisture in your air compressor when blowing your ps3 out. of course this is once your ps3 has been fix.

the termal paste is called thermal compound. i use arctic silver 5. the silver transfers heat a little better and can withstand a slightly higher temperature. and its only 7-10$. if your want to be fancy with your re-flow you can use a [no flux clean pen] $10( you just squirt some in between the chip and the board before you start heating the chips you don't have to be shy about using it just get it in there good, but its not need. if you do use the no flux clean pen when you are heating the chips you may hear a cracking noise its normal.

youtube.com has a number of videos to walk you through the process of doing the re-flow, just don't use one of those easy fixes where they don't open up the system.

And what are the squares/rettangles that are used on the smaller chips?

thanks you!!!

If you are talking about the little pads stuck on to the chips or the metal sheet. There a called thermal pads. If you don't damage them you can reuse them.

its not caused by overheating its caused by solder joints

the system needs to be reflowed or reballed or have the rsx chip be replaced

It is believed that the main cause of the Yellow Light of Death is due to the chip getting so hot during heavy use of the console that the tiny solder points on the GPU liquefies, and over time loses its connection with the motherboard. This is however untrue as in order for the solder to melt the chip would have to reach a temperature of at least 217c which is impossible. The real cause however does have to do with heat, which causes micro fractures in the solder but does not in no way melt it.

yes i was just mentioning that its not a DIY fix without the proper bga rework machine

$800+ usually

Well... Sort of. When you heat up solder, even if its not hot enough to melt it, you get whats called a cold solder joint that gives a bad connection. So it doesnt get hot enough to fully melt, but it can still get hot enough to damage the solder joints.

I downloaded a guide and it's working perfectly fine for me. Even my PS3 is like 5 years old still working like a charm. It's step by step so it's a no brainer even for me that i see two cables with diferent colors and i start panicking like i have a bomb on my hands. Lol. You should give it a try.
