try putting the device into DFU mode (Google It) and then restore it with itunes, this will erase all data on the ipod

This is exactly what you want to do. YOu first want o find the firmware you want to update to (certain games and apps only work for certain apps). after that is complete, then you want to follow the man above. and make sure to backup your files.
