Water Damage iPhone 6 DIY Fix

Hello everyone, I have never attempted to repair my own phone before so some basic questions,

My iPhone 6 was in a pool for about 2-5 minutes, I cant fully remember. I did try to turn it on about 1 million times (I know it wasn't good idea I was just freaking out).

About 15 hours later I took the screen off fully and put that and the rest under rice and silica packets (I know its more of a placebo than actually working.)

After being under rice for about 4 days I put it back together and it still doesn't turn on.

So to my question, is there anyway I can search through my phone to see what new parts I might need to buy and replace or should I just cut my losses and leave the phone.

With water damage, you have to decontaminate the logic board before doing anything else, otherwise there will be latent issues down the road.

Not every water-damaged phone is recoverable and depending on the kind of liquid (salty, dirty, filthy), sometimes the success rate is quite low. That said, IMHO, it's always worth a try otherwise we are just piling up the e-waste.

The rice myth kills too many phones...

The water is inside the phone, on the logic board and under the shields, even under the IC's. The rice is nowhere near where the water is. So while it “may’’ soak up some water vapour, the real problem is the mineral deposits that can cause short circuits or the corrosion that is taking place as the water evaporates. Leaving the power on the device accelerates the process. The longer you let a phone sit in rice, the more time you are giving corrosion to damage your logic board. The saltier or harder the water is, the more damage will occur. The water needs to be displaced, not evaporated. Here’s a great video that summarizes these issues.

On some phones, rice treatments appear to work. But those are phones that had minimal water ingress and not anywhere near a danger area on the logic board. They would have recovered regardless of the intervention.

  • Open your phone and remove the logic board (follow this guide)
  • Inspect the logic board, especially around the connectors and look for corrosion.
  • Inspect both sides of the board. Unfortunately, most of the board is covered in shields. That's usually where the damage is occurring.
  • Put your board in a container with >90% isopropyl alcohol and let it sit for a while.
  • Use a soft brush, like a toothbrush and lightly brush away any corrosion you see.
  • Rinse in alcohol and repeat.
  • Let it air dry for a day.
  • Re-assemble and hope for the best.

You should also replace the battery if it has swollen. Resist the temptation to pop it to let the gas out. A compromised Li-ion battery is a fire hazard. If the device appears to power up but behaves erratically, then use a tool like 3uTools to flash the firmware as it may be corrupted.

A professional repair shop that does water damage repair may be able to recover your phone or the data because they have access to pro-level ultrasonic baths and specialized cleaners as well as the skills to troubleshoot your board. Many shops have a no fix/no fee policy so you don't have to spend money to find out if the phone is fixable or not.

Will 70% alcohol work? Instead my country doesn't sell 90%, also the battery can go in the alcohol too?

из

I would not recommend 70%....it could contain trace amounts of heavy minerals

If 70% is all you have, then it will have to do. If you have access to Methanol, that would be even better. I wouldn't put the battery in the IPA, just the logic board.

Thanks! I followed the guide and what you said and actually got the phone to turn on, but I made another post about the touch screen it would be so helpful if you could check that one out too real quick. :)

How long did you put the logic board for?

Just did this repair on iPhone 6 no boot after water damage, ran fine after, put in rice for awhile, powered on, screen flash squiggly lines and no boot (All done by relatives of a friend haha)

Opened it up and took out logic board (need to track screws carefully (get a rubber mat to put them on so they don’t easily get bounced around), if wrong longer screw goes into the hole (particular the lower 3 LCD EMI cover screws) it will damage the circuit board, its called long screw damage if you want to search for that) and found the frequently burnt out capacitor (C5202_RF) on water damaged iPhone 6/6+. Failed cap created a short on the power rails to the wifi chip. Had a cell phone repair shop remove this cap and phone is fully function. Cap doesn’t need to be replaced since its just condition the power source for lower noise for the wifi chip power supply. Not really necessary.

I also gave the logic board an alcohol bath for good measures. Didn’t have an ultrasonic cleaner for a more thorough cleaning so 99% alcohol bath is best most consumer could do. There will likely be residue near the power button on the back frame as well since this cap will be near this area when logic board is mounted. Cleaned that out as well.

Youtube is full of videos on this failed cap. Here is the search and one I found particularly clear (its a 6+ but basically same failure as 6 on water damage)

Here is the schematic link (page 1 shows location of C5202_RF, page 52 shows it as a power supply conditioner)

Any idea guys what could be wrong. After water damage everything worked fine for a month. Then all of the sudden does not turn on - with power cable attached showed apple logo, without power source blackout. Replaced battery, now shows apple logo, leaves backlight on and then nothing.

Show Apple logo + backlight means LCD path is working fine. System not booting up probably means more challenging issue like CPU which is all buried under soldered on EMI shields. Probably cheapest thing you can do is take the logic board out and give it a 99% alcohol bath. Beyond that, not worth repairing at current worth for iPhone 6. Track screws carefully if you remove logic board. Particularly the lower screws holding down EMI shield for the LCD connector. If the longer screw goes down the wrong hole, it will tear up logic traces in the multi layer board and ruin it.
