Traction control light (and abs light)

Hello.

I recently had a traction control light coming on in my Pontiac G5 GT (didn't see a forum for G5). When the traction control light was on, the car would jerk when shifting gears (it's an automatic). After time, the abs light came on as well. At this point the jerking seemed to stop. I took it into the shop. They ran a test and said it was probably a bad wheel sensor. They replaced the bad wheel sensor and gave the car back. Within minutes, the traction control light came back on. No abs light this time, and the car doesn't seem to be jerking anymore. I took the car back in and they said the code was leading them back to the abs, meaning it's probably the abs module causing the problem. If so, it would need to be replaced. This will cost somewhere between $450 - $600.

I'm wondering if this all sounds right? Did they even fix anything the first time around? Thanks!

Hi @kyleguy ,

Go to another shop for a second opinion on the codes. Try AutoZone , apparently they do it for free.

Did they give you the "faulty" wheel sensor part back when they replaced it?

You should always ask for the bad parts back when they are replaced. If only to prove they've done something. After all it is yours. They may have a stock of 'bad' parts available to give back, but that may be me just being cynical.

Thanks, @jayeff . And no, they didn't give me the faulty sensor. I didn't think to ask. I understand cynical. It's hard not to be. I really hope I'm wrong in this case, but paying $275 only to find that the light is still on, and then being told it will probably cost another $450-600? I don't know. I'll swing by AutoZone in hope of getting some helpful information. If you think of anything else, please let me know. Thank you very much.

@jayeff So I took it too O'Reilly. They scanned it and got back "C0561." I'm basically finding this about it:

"In the case of this GM code, the electronic brake control module (EBCM) is what disables the traction control system or the vehicle stability enhancement system. The code means the EBCM is receiving faulty data from other modules or is faulty itself."

That's essentially what the guy at O'Reilly thought as well. Said it could be a connection issue somewhere, or an issue with the module itself. He also said that the code was in the car's history, rather than showing up currently; although I have no idea what that means.

I'll also mention that the Check Engine light is on. The shop had told me this has to due with emissions, but that we don't test for that in Michigan, so it's not a problem.

In conclusion, I guess it sounds like the shop might be right that it has to do with ABS module? Whether or not the "faulty" wheel sensor actually needed to be fixed, I have no idea.

@jayeff , @kyleguy if theres a problem with the EBCM it will not cast a ABS code or cause the ABS light to come on . So yes there was probably a wheel sensor gone . The reason the the light for the traction control was off when leaving the shop was because the mechanic reset the codes and it took a few minutes to launch the code again. Obviously the mechanic didn't take the car for a test drive to check his work . Poor practice on the mechanics part . As for getting the parts back I always return the old parts in the new parts box . I make a habit of it for 2 reasons . One the customer can see a new part was put on and can see the old warn out part and secondly this way I dont have to dispose of them myself

Thanks, @jimfixer . So in your opinion, it's entirely possible that they did in fact fix a wheel sensor, which took care of the ABS light. And now the traction control light is still coming on due to a separate issue: communication with the EBCM, perhaps?

The strange thing is that the traction control light has been coming on for months now. I had it looked at a while back and the mechanic said it was probably a wheel sensor. I didn't have the money to fix it so I left it alone. The ABS light just recently came on, right before I took it to the shop. Them putting on a new wheel sensor fixed the ABS light, but not the traction control.

I find the biggest problem with GM traction control is with the yaw sensor and the steering angle sensor. When the yaw sensor goes the vehicle will lock up the brake of the freewheeling side when turning hard to the left or right . when the steering sensor goes the steering wheel shudders when doing long slow curves however you mentioned a strong hard shift or jerk between shifts . This sounds like the throttle actuator. But before you get to excited about changing anything check the transmission fluid level . If the level is overfilled ,or low ,it can cause the transmission to shift odd and this can cause the traction control to throw an error code. you may want to check that before letting them change anything. Hope this helps

Thank you so much, @jimfixer . Unfortunately, checking the transmission fluid level is outside my level of knowledge. It's a sealed unit on my car. I got my oil changed recently and they said it was time to change my transmission fluid. So it could be related? Regarding the throttle actuator, I'm back in the shop tomorrow morning. I'll ask them about that as well.

I also want to mention this: the TC light is never on when I first start the car. Yesterday I drove for about 3 minutes before in came on. Sometimes I start the car and sit for 30 seconds and then it comes on. Sometimes I sit for 2 minutes and then it comes on. It always comes on within 5 minutes or so, usually less. The only consistency I've noticed is that it seems to come on when idling: either sitting in my parking lot before leaving, or sitting at a red light. I don't think this is ALWAYS the case. It does come on while driving (so this could be red herring), but it does seem to mostly come on when idle. Thanks again!

@kelley2018 Yes! It was finally resolved!

Have them test your solenoids. Apparently one of mine was out. They replaced it for about $90 and I haven't had a problem since. Unfortunately, I spent $500+ before I finally hired a mechanic who found the real issue. At least it's finally resolved though.

Of course, this might not be the issue you're having. I hope it is though. Good luck!

My traction control light keeps randomly coming on with the ABS light and if i don’t pull over right away to re start the car my power steering message comes on then the car starts jerking.

Hi. This is a common problem on Pontiac G6 cars, usually caused by a communication error. While not always the solution, you can "work" the connections at the body control module (BCM), located to the left of the front passenger footwell. Pull the plastic panel out from the back edge to reveal the fuse block and BCM. You will see three large connectors attached to the BCM, two of which are held on with plastic "levers". Pull the two plastic levers toward you and the connectors will loosen. When you push the connectors back into the BCM, the levers will want to return to the locked position. It is a good idea to do this several times to clean any corrosion off of the pins inside the connectors. This may help with your intermittent communication problem and trouble lights.

Be aware that something that causes an engine performance issue can also turn on the traction control / stability warnings. (Those systems are disabled in the event of some engine issues.) In my case it was a broken wire in the Intake Air Temp sensor circuit, right near the Mass Air sensor. Auto Zone or Advance will usually plug in a scanner and give you any standing codes, free of charge. 2010 G6 GT.

I had the same issue tc light on , hard shifting , shaking when I stop or just at iddling 2007 G6 3.5 and what it was # 4 injector gone bad replaced it and lights in the dash and other issues are fixed.

All I have done to get mine fixed is grease the BCM connectors on passenger side floor dash. If it messes up again it needs grease again. Super cheap fix.

@kristen williams, what symptoms were fixed, after greasing BCM connectors? My 09 g6 2.4 has a jerk/miss occasionally, and when it does that, the speed hand goes down and back up.

I had the same thing go wrong on my g6. After taking it to a shop here in my home town, and an hour and half later I was told it was my upper cam shaft sencer, witch is located on top of the engine on the passenger side. There are two side by side. One is for the lower and one is for the upper. I replaced the upper one and it fixed this issue. A few days later I replaced the lower one and if had no issue after. I looked around on the net and there was no info about this. Or even at the dealership. I hope this helps for anyone that is having this same type of issues with there G6.

No problem Kelly. I'm glad to pass this info on. In total I spent around $300. The two sencers cost me around 160.? So in the end $460. The stupid thing is . Not one mention anyplace about this problem. Doing a code scan does nothing but cost money on things that never needed to be replaced.

Sure hope this helps. One thing for sure I'll be spending about her 400 on CV shafts on both sides. The u-joints are now making noise.

Sucks ..!!! .

I looked up symptoms of a bad camshaft sensor, and it sounds an awful lot like what I'm experiencing. If so, holy $@$*, it would be great to finally fix this problem. At the same time, it would leave me wondering, why have three separate shops and hundreds of dollars not been able to figure this out?

I realize you say there's no information about this online, but three shops not being able to detect this still seems strange, no?

Also, I realize I don't yet know if the cam shaft sensor is even the problem I'm having. Either way, I still have yet to find a mechanic that knows how to fix my car.

Hello,

I see most of you are having the ABS lights and the T/C light coming on. My ‘09 g6 3.5L is on the T/C light. With a message saying service traction control. Brake lights come on and stay on.

it doesn’t always do it. Are the cam shaft sensor the problem or do I need to have the BCM greased? Thanks

There is a recall for that .check with your local dealer its a safety recall so it's free other than an little of your time it took about two hours

personalty, I have found so much speculation, and un-informed information and guesstimation on this string as to make me throw up in my mouth a little bit. something reporting an error on the BMC would not be rectified by fixing a component controlled by the ECM. get a clue Gentelmen. there are only two systems that are common. one could possably be the CAN buss. the other, the one I am intending on persuing on my 2007 G6 GT 3.9 with a manual 6 speed is simply, a grounding issue. just remove all of the grounding contacts to the body and frame and clean them as you see fit, I hit it with a wire brush and some Deoxit 100 and reattach. You would be amazed at how many problems this will fix.

I have to agree with you. I have a 2009 G6 convertable with the 3.9L. Outside of brake lights issue which was somewhat benefited with the diectric greese trick not to many issues till now days where GM stop recalling these things. Aproaching 150,000 miles a new electric sterring column may fix the klinking and somewhat shaky sterring. all 4 TPSM are out. Doing somewhat of a tune up, with air filter, map and trottle body clean up, plugs, wires, hoping to gain fuel milage. Have explored fuse boxes, cleaning ground wires, but its time and money too. Keep in the fight

I had these same issues with my 2006 G6 GT it ended up being a bad wire in the harness had a shop run down the bad wire and fixed it the tc light and hard shifting stopped and never came back. It's worth checking out

(OP here) This is nuts. My traction control light is now back on months later. My car is also throwing a code for multiple pistons misfiring. The car is shaking, making crazy noises under the hood, jerking when shifting gears. The shop I took it to doesn’t know what is causing it; the same shop that replaced a transmission solenoid months back, which somehow got the TC light to stop coming on, until now. I’m so %#*@ tired of this.

Okay... now I'm not sure if it's the same engine.. I drive the g6 with the 2.4l. Now I have had the same issues. What fixed my problems was replacing these two cylanoid that are on top of the engine on the passenger side . They are side by side. One is for the upper camshaft position. And the other is for the lower camshaft. I believe that is right. The upper one , when it starts to go, will affect the shifting. The lower will effect the way the car runs. After going to different shops. And only getting the response of ... can't find the problem. One mechanic did. And those to on the top of the engine were the problem. They are not all that much. And very easy to replace... give those a try and let me know if it works out for u.

Oh, maybe I misunderstood the message you left above back in January: was it the solenoids you replaced or the camshaft position sensors?

I have a 2009 g6, 3.5:liter. I bought the car in Jan 2023 with 130k. About 2 weeks ago t/c light came on. Cruise control stopped working and auto door locks stopped working all at the same time! I'm not mechanical at all, but I pulled the blue piece off by the passenger seat and applied dielectric grease the best I could. All the warning lights disappeared and locks worked for about two hours and then warning lights came back on and locks stopped working. I took it to mechanic this week and he pulled the blue piece off, but he didn't disconnect the battery. In the video it made a point to disconnect the battery before going any further. Could he have done more damage? Know all the problems are constant instead of intermittently. Locks would work sometimes and traction light and cruise would work intermittently. Now they are out all the time. If I knew these cars had these problems I would have never bought it.

I have a 2008 Pontiac G6 the traction light comes on & goes off as I am driving. I notice when it does my car jerks as it is changing .. my car also seems to want to stahl out at times while at a red light or parked after this happens while I drive. Also traction service shows up on radio /dash .. I had my oil changed lately & it seems to of started after .. don’t know if it has anything to do with it or just a coincidence.. (filled all fluids & put air in my tire as well)

Did they put in the correct wt. Oil ? If not that can have a bad effect on a lot of things.

I have a 2007 Pontiac G6 and the TC light is on and my speed odometer went to 0 and my rpm odometer went up to almost 3 and it started to act funny and I pulled over off the highway and went to go start it and it would not start and my dash reads error and my radio dash reads service traction ???? Anyone have any thoughts

All of these problems originate in the engine bay fuse box, after 2 years I finally found an article explaining the issue. I'll try and find it.
