HP Compaq Business laptop released in 2004. This model shares many resemblances to previously released Compaq models. All laptops use a Pentium M processor (32-bit only) but speed varies based on your specific configuration.

Is this LVDS cable look kinked?

Photos of the questionable LVDS cable:

This laptop was having ocassional LCD glitch issues for a while. Since it has persisted, I replaced the LVDS cable and applied new tape to make sure the problem is fixed; I have a few spare cables. If it doesn’t, I need to try a display to rule out the GPU (somewhat common on this model). I don’t think the cable will come loose:

HOWEVER, I inspected the old cable to see if it’s good to see if it can still be used. When doing that, I noticed multiple unusual kinks. I have attached pictures of the kinks that look unusual.

I don’t think this cable is kinked (or if it is, it doesn’t matter) but the ones I shown in the photos do raise some concerns. Does it look normal or does the cable I removed look like it had hidden damage that created the display problems?

Hi @nick ,

Can you hook up the cable again (externally so to speak)and get the display working and start gently tapping the cable at the "kink" points to see if there are any indications of this happening on the display?

If the wires are fractured it might show up

If you're into this kind of thing a lot, having to check cables for laptop screens I'm wondering it it would be worthwhile to get one of these - example only and substitute your cable when doing a test.

Cheers.

@jayeff possibly but it's intermittent on this notebook. I'd probably need to leave it for a few weeks to be sure.

Not ideal to test it with one of those. I also don't run into these a lot since 99% of the time there's an obvious cable fault I can point to that tells me.

Hi @nick ,

OK

Cheers.

@jayeff this is a deep rooted problem. I've tried a new display and cable... No help. Possible battery fault since it's weird in that I haven't noticed it with the battery installed but on battery it's there. I'm not sure if the new parts helped but it's weird and I am paying attention.

I'm thinking it may be the RAM so I've swapped out one of the modules to rule out a partial failure. If it still happens I'll swap both. Beyond that it's the secondary board or GPU and at that point I'm done trying to fix it. I have another unit that I can move to if it comes to that but it needs thermal paste and a lot of BIOS updates.

Look a like cable is not a key role for making connection between display and connector the only concern is this the connecting slots must be same to the removed cable and the pairing of cable to the slots must be same to the removing cables.

LVDS cables CAN fail due to problems with the wiring. It's not limited to the connectors or connection quality.

I'm asking because I'm not sure if this amount of damage is sufficient to cause an issue.

I think it's more of a bad display problem in my case. I'll see if the display replacement works.

thats right you can try a new display may be the wire is in good condition but the display is having issues
