Mac Battery stays at 1% and turns off when unplugged

Left my Macbook on charge one night and the next morning unplugged it and it powered off straight away, I plugged it back in and noticed the charge percentage wasn’t moving. Tried the option key+press on the battery icon and it said ‘replace now’. I only got this laptop for Christmas 2018 (so I’ve had it for around a year and a half) so I don;t understand how the battery has gone already. I’ve attempted to do an SMC reset but the laptop doesn't turn back on when I press the power button unless I unplug and re-plug it, and there’s no difference to the battery. I updated the system (Catalina 10.15.5) and the only difference is when I press on the battery icon it says ‘battery is not charging’. Is there anything I can do right now other than take it to an Apple store?

Did you take out the AppleCare+ service contract? If you did Apple owes you a new battery!

из

Ah, I forgot to mention it! Sry Dan and Sophie!

из

@danj Unfortunately not, I think I only had a 1 year warranty so seems I'll have to pay for it to be fixed at the Apple shop they reopen. Any ideas on what could have damaged the battery so much? The only bad thing I can think of that I've done is leave it on charge too often.

из

It's not sitting on the charger its the cycles that kills most batteries. That gets into how you use the system, deep discharge and then recycling burns the cycles.

The second issue is the charger and now with USB-C the quality of the cable. Make sure the charger is certified by Apple or an Apple unit and use the Apple power USB-C cable.

из

@danj I'm still using the same cable I got with the Mac and one end of it looks to have turned slightly yellow so I'm thinking it could be one of the causes. Just been on my laptop for a while there and it shut off and restarted suddenly "because of a problem"

Hi!

I don’t want to scare you, but yeah looks like your battery is dead. Not sure if you can test with another charger? At the Apple Store they can. You can try to fix it for yourself, but this will be not easy.

Guide: MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys 2017 Battery Replacement

So you can decide for yourself to fix it or let it be fixed. And yeah, I agree, this shouldn’t happen withing 2 years… But also depends on how you used it.. Perhaps someone else know if this is a common issue or that something else is broken which is causing it (I don’t have a lot of experience with this Macbook). But so far I can tell now, it looks like your battery is out of the game..

Yeah I was kinda afraid of that :/. Thank you anyway though!

No worries! But Dan is right, If you took the AppleCare+ contract, Apple owes you a new battery.

Hi, i'm facing a very similar problem, except that i'm using a 2016 13” mac book pro and started using in the latter part of 2017 only. The end of the USB C charging cable that i always plug to the side of the mac book has turned slightly yellow as well. And i've been getting this problem ftom somewhere in the 1st week of june as well. And resetting SMC didnt help.

Could you solve the problem?

The best thing you can do is to install this gem of an app! CoconutBattery take a snapshot of the apps main window and post it here for us to see Adding images to an existing question

You also want a better means to monitor your chargers power using a USB-C power meter like Satechi USB-C Power Meter Tester

Depending on its age you may in fact need a new battery. You could have a bad charger and/or cable as well. Make sure you use the correct cable as many 3rd party cables are not fully wired or have the needed wire gage.

из

Yeahhh I ended up having to get a new battery, the Apple guy said it wasn't anything I did, it was just a battery failure, which shouldn't happen within 2 years. Turns out the laptop was bought from John Lewis and I have a 2 year warranty on it, but it doesn't cover the battery for some reason. I'd definitely get your battery checked out.

из

I also asked about the charger, because my lead was going yellow at the ends too, and he said I shouldn't have to replace it, it's just from overuse I think.

Was your mac super slow when it was stuck on 1% battery?

Same problem for me. And I have seen many macbook pro users say they are facing the same issue. Some users even have the same problem after they purchased a new battery. I think that’s a software problem but Apple haven’t have any reponse yet.

I am having the same problem with 13” Mac Book Pro. I purchased a new power adapter and USB-C cable from apple ($125 together)… problem still persists. I turned off battery management … did not help. When I put my Mac into sleep cycle it will eventually charge… it usually takes 10 to 15 hours to charge this way but eventually it is recharged. Right now … I’m at 100%… I unplugged the power adapter… but it thinks that the power adapter is plugged in and charging. I think its a Catalina problem.

@sirbman - If you really feel this is a Catalina issue you should visit an Apple Store to get it verified.

Sadly, I think you have a hardware level issue within your logic board. The Apple Store can verify if thats the case as well.

из

I just upgraded to Catalina. My battery was fine and fully charged when I started the install, but by the time it was done the battery read 1% and it won't charge. If you look at system information it says there is 0 charge remaining, but it also says it's fully charged so it won't let it charge. I have tried resetting the SMC but as mentioned above the only way I can get it to come back on is to unplug and replug the USB-C.

Charge Information:

Charge Remaining (mAh): 0

Fully Charged: Yes

Charging: No

Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 6389

Health Information:

Cycle Count: 109

Condition: Service Recommended

Battery Installed: Yes

Amperage (mA): 0

Voltage (mV): 12753

Hi,

I’m struggling with the same situation. As far as I know, the ultimate solution would be the battery replacement, but frankly, I would like to avoid that. My battery has only 316 cycles and is 1181 days old, and still on 82.5% of design capacity.

I’ve tried multiple things like SMC reset, SW updates, etc., but still cannot charge (with the original Apple USB-C charger).

Can you see any other option than battery replacement?

Thanks a lot!

Same here after updating macOS.

из

The fix has been done by battery replacement.

из

@Jiri Fiala Your battery seems good.

из

@whatisup Unfortunately, nothing else worked for me. The replacement was the only solution...

I have the same issue now (not charging with always 1% power) after updating the macOS to 10.15.6. I guess that the reason is the feature ‘battery health management’ that was introduced in 10.15.5.

Hey, I think it’ll definitely be your battery. The only fix for mine was to get it replaced sadly, which costs a few.

You can bring it to a repair store to check what’s wrong either the battery or charger
