One key puts two letters from keyboard

I have a Early 2008 MacBook with the 2.4 Core 2 Duo, and it's been bugging me with the keyboard putting two letters (eg. C puts CB and 3 puts 35) and I don't know how to fix it.

Does anyone know a quick solution so I can restore this fascinating laptop?

Sadly the keys are chattering so it doesn’t take much to have a double hit.

You’ll need a new uppercase assembly MacBook Santa Rosa/Penryn Upper Case with Keyboard sorry finding the part will need some doing as this is such an old system. At best you might be able to find one from another dead system.

Do think about a newer system which still has parts and may offer better security than this one.

@marcusspano The part you will find will probably have the plastic cracked off by the front bottom edge.

@mayer You can't win with the A1181. They're either dead, the parts are cracked, or they're BER :/. If you need legacy SW and that's why you still run an A1181, the 2011/12 13" A1278 Pros are the safer bet. If you need to run SL, get a 2010 A1278.

The Retina series is too new for some of these older programs, and expen$ive to repair -- my 2014 Iris and 2015 DG Retina Pros are workhorses, but the screens are EXPEN$IVE to replace.

Hi Marcus,

Keyboards are always a sticky issue, since that's where all the dirt and liquids end up when they're loosened upon the world as you're working on your computer.

Best thing you can try is to turn off the computer and remove the battery, then remove the key caps and the hinges and rubber pieces and clean it out with high concentration (90% or better) isopropyl alcohol. Blow or vacuum it well then reassemble and test.

That's really about all you can do; if that doesn't fix the issue then you're probably going to have to replace the keyboard. Naturally it's not that easy; the keyboard, upper case and trackpad all come as a single unit which makes replacement easier but costs more. Fortunately those systems are old enough that replacement parts are easy to find and getting more inexpensive all the time. Check Amazon, eBay and AliExpress for your specific model number.

The upper case itself isn't too bad to replace, and iFixit has a guide to step you through the whole process.

Good luck with it; let us know what you find and how it turns out!

@danj, this is the second downvote I've ever gotten, both of them from you and neither of them obvious as to why they were given. Can you explain what was wrong with my answer that you felt it necessary to mark it as wrong?

@dadibrokeit - I’m sorry you feel you got hurt here, I have someone who chooses to over reach. I promise you I give you up-votes! I’m the one who looses.

Both answers are good answers, nether is better then the other!

The keys in this keyboard are not easy to pull without damage as the plastic has become brittle from age! In the end replacing the uppercase is about all one can do.

A Unibody system keyboard is a lot easier to find and getting the key parts are as well, granted more work though!

@danj so just so that my feeble mind understands this correctly. You are downvoting someone's answer because your answer did not receive an upvote? I did upvote the answer provided by @dadibrokeit based on the explanation on how to at least try to fix the keyboard before replacing it.

@oldturkey03 - NO! It’s a matter of equal. Sometimes it’s best not to bias the answers based on your feelings which over and over again you abuse.

But you can spin it anyway you want. You have a problem!

Do you ever look how much you press your thumb into me over this pettiness. Keep pressing!

@dadibrokeit - Jerry, I’m sorry this has bubbled up here. You did nothing wrong.
