Only one side of a double switch box working?

Block Image

We are replacing two single switches with two single smart switches. Once we’ve connected the two new switches, only the one on the right is operational.

We simply cannot get the left side to power up.

Hi @maxmorley,

What is the make and model number of the smart switch?

Post an image in your question of the wiring side of both switches showing how you've connected the wires.

Here's how on ifixit Adding images to an existing question

If the two original single switches were also side by side, they may have had a common power input i.e. only one power supply wire connected to one switch and then a smaller wire (or internal busbar if dual switch box) connecting from that wire over to the 2nd switch input side i.e. the power supply was connected in parallel to both switches.

The output side of each switch would have their own wire feeding to the particular circuit that they controlled

Hi @maxmorley,

What were the original switches used for before i.e. what did they turn on and off?

Also what country are you located in?

If the USA then it could be that the 2 x black wires = 1 power feed, the 1 x red wire is another power feed but a different phase, the 2 x white wires coming out of the wall are Neutral wires although they could also be the wires connecting to whatever device(s) the switches controlled and the bare wire is an Earth, most probably used to earth the switch box if it was metal.

One possibility is that the two black wires were joined together on the input to one switch and one of the white wires went from the output of the switch and the red wire was connected to the input of the 2nd switch and the other white wire was connected to the output of the 2nd switch.

You would really need to use an AC voltmeter to check what wires had power on them i.e. connect the voltmeter (AC scale 200V) between a black wires and the earth and check if there's voltage on it. Then do the same with the other black wire and then the red wire.

You would need to have the fuses in to do this.

Testing for AC power is dangerous and could be lethal if you don't know what you're doing - call an electrician. You're life's worth much more.
