Media players with CD read capabilities

CD player won't spin disc

I have a CD player radio (Disney DB3050-C) that will suddenly not play any CD I put in it. It's a clamshell style player and when I close the door, it just will not spin the disc no matter what I do.

Some information that might help:

  • The door is supposed to be spring loaded but the spring broke, it still latches closed but I have to manually lower it down to open it. That is the only other problem with it; the radio portion works fine.
  • On this model, it's supposed to display "00" if it can't read the disc or if the door is open. When I close the door, it displays a blinking "--" like it's trying to read the disc, but it just never spins so it can't. So it's not a dirty disc or laser lens, nor the door not being closed.
  • I have tried various CDs in various conditions, from old and scratched to brand new and nothing changes.
  • If I put a disc on the spindle, I can easily spin the disc and spindle with my hand. It is not stiff and doesn't seem to be misaligned or scraping in any way.
  • I received the player new and the CD player hasn't seen much use, so I don't think it's worn out from overuse. I also haven't moved it much, keep the door closed when not in use, and have never touched the lens, so I don't think I've done anything to damage it. I keep it plugged in all the time.

I don't really know what could be wrong with it. My only idea is that because it's from 2005, maybe it has capacitor issues that prevent the drive from working properly? I don't know. Please help!

The issue was a dirty lens. I put a lens cleaning disc in and alternated between spinning the disc by hand and closing the door a few times to see if it would play. When I finally got it to play, I let it play for one cycle. Now it's reading discs fine. It seems like the manual was wrong about what it displayed when it can't read a disc; it displays '--' and not '00'.

Before that, I tried to open it up and it's not really a repairable model. All of the circuit boards are attached to the front of the case, but there's a wire connecting the antenna on the back of the case to the circuit board which is too short to let the front case piece lay flat on the table and soldered on both ends so it can't be removed. The case therefore can't be opened enough to unscrew the circuit boards to look at them or the CD drive (which is between the circuit board and the front case. Really bad design for no reason and I'm glad the issue was just a dirty lens.

I came across this issues a few time before. Specific tips from my own cases:

One of my CD players had a weak spindle motor. it would spin slowly but couldn’t lift the tolerance and spin up. Replacing with a stronger motor solved it.

In another case, old grease had turned gummy, effectively locking the bearing, cleaning with alcohol and re-lubing (with light machine oil) restored free rotation.

In one more, the belt connecting the motor to the main gear had stretched over time, a new belt (from salvage parts) immediately restored function.

I once bypassed a faulty belt / clutch by rigidly coupling the motor to the disc hub (just for test), once that worked, I knew mechanical transmission was the issue.
