Background
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) is a CPU developer, GPU developer, field-programmable gate array (FPGA) developer, system-on-chip designer, high performance computing component developer, founded in 1969, USA. Throughout the decades, AMD has operated in the RAM, microcomputer, EPROM, DRAM, flash memory and among other markets. AMD does currently focus on high performance computing and data centers, AI acceleration, cloud computing, supercomputers such as the LUMI supercomputer, digitization in the automotive industry with processing and AI integration, and with AMD's latest FPGA developments powering NASA's Perserverance rover for computer vision and AI on Mars.
AMD initially began as a second source supplier, manufacturing licensed microchips. They began selling their first own product in 1970, the Am9300, a 4-bit shift register, and later the Am2501 logic counter. In 1971, AMD entered the microprocessor market with the 8-bit 6 µm node Am9080 CPU, reverse-engineered from circa 400 images of the Intel 8080 processor. AMD and Intel has had long-lasting rivalries and partnerships since their founding, in 1976, AMD and Intel acquired a cross-licensing agreement of the microcode run by their microprocessors. By 1981, IBM wanted to use Intel processors in their PCs, but required a second-source manufacturer, which AMD became in 1982, a license agreement which lasted until 1995. They've both rivaled in the CPU market, and in the GPU market since.
AMD acquired ATI Technologies in 2006, whom been making video cards since the 80s, and ATI were the one to introduce the Radeon family in year 2000. After the acquisition AMD continued to use the ATI name for their GPUs until the introduction of the Radeon 6000 series in 2010. In 2019 came the RDNA instruction architecture set, along with the Radeon RX 5000 series GPUs, the first generation RDNA featured TSMC's N7 technology, decreased the thread count from 64 to 32 threads while introducing SIMD32 computing and per cycle issued instructions. AMD's RDNA 2, released in 2020, introduced more efficient power usage which allowed higher clocks, and ray tracing. RDNA 2 is the same architecture powering the Sony PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S consoles and the Steam Deck. In 2022 RDNA 3 introduced multi-chip modules and AI accelerators. RDNA 4 came in 2025, using TSCM's N4 technology, with 3rd generation ray tracing and and 2nd generation AI accelerators.
Identification
AMD does generally not distribute Radeon graphics cards directly, but licenses to board partners for the manufacturing of the Radeon GPUs.
