Background
The Analogue Pocket is a portable handheld gaming system designed with inspiration from the early Game Boy models, but with a modern screen. Crafted for retro video game enthusiasts, it was released on December 13, 2021 and is touted as not being an emulator—it reads physical cartridges. It's compatible with Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance game cartridges, and has the option to mimic their screens. The pocket also works with cartridge adapters for Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket Color, Atari Lynx, and other systems. The Pocket is FPGA based, allowing for the hardware to be reconfigured by users. In addition, Analogue offers the "Dock", which allows a user to connect the Pocket to a TV through HDMI and play with up to four controllers. Cartridge adapters and the Dock can be found on Analogue's website.
Analogue teamed up with GB Studio, a software that allows you to easily create retro games, drag-and-drop style. The games can then be exported as proprietary .pocket
files and run from your Pocket's SD card.
The Pocket also boasts musical ability, with a built-in digital audio workstation called Nanoloop that's a synthesizer and sequencer. You can connect the Pocket to your computer with MIDI & Sync cables.
Identification
The Analogue Pocket looks very similar to the Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, and Game Boy Color. The Pocket's cartridge reader is lower than the Game Boy's, and it has clickable rear bumpers. The screen has "Analogue Pocket" printed in the bottom left corner, and the buttons don't have markings on them. It also has the Analogue logo engraved on the back cover. There are three color options for the Pocket: black and white available at launch, and glow-in-the-dark starting September 1st, 2023.
