Background
The first ever rotary hammer with an electro-pneumatic motor to be put on the market was the Hilti TE 17 in 1967. Hilti's product began to gain some traction in the market after this and lead the company to become the exclusive producer of these hand tools for roughly a decade. Now, electro-pneumatic rotary hammers are produced by many of the major tool manufacturers in the country, including Bauer, Bosch, Dewalt, and Milwaukee. The Milwaukee 1-9/16" Spline Rotary Hammer is a corded rotary hammer hand tool used to chisel and drill holes into hard surfaces.
These tools work like a mini-jackhammer to break through tough aggregates like concrete, utilizing an electro-pneumatic motor that uses both electricity and pistons to power the hammer. There are two pistons used to power the drill; a drive piston and a flying piston. The drive piston gets moved back and forth through a chamber when the electric motor turns a crank. The flying piston, located on the opposite end of the chamber, is then used to transfer the force from the air compression created by the drive piston into the hammering mechanism. The electro-pneumatic motor powers two functions of the rotary hammer; hammer mode, which moves the hammer similarly to a jackhammer, and drill mode, which rotates the bit like a traditional drill would.
Milwaukee tends to update its power tools approximately every two to three years. The current model of Milwaukee's Spline Rotary Hammer holds the model number: 5316-21 but is nearly identical to its previous model in terms of specifications. Milwaukee has also expanded its line of rotary hammers, adding gas, electric, and battery-powered versions to its product line, though the majority of these rotary hammer options use either an SDS-Max or SDS-Plus (Slotted Drive System) chuck instead of a spline chuck.
According to EReplacementParts.com, the most common problems that users have had with the Milwaukee Spline Rotary Hammer are issues getting the tool to power on and excessive sparking from the tool's motor. The Milwaukee 1-9/16" Spline Rotary Hammer retails for approximately $429 at full price.
Identification
The Milwaukee 1-9/16" Spline Rotary Hammer totes the traditional red, silver, and black colorway as all of Milwaukee's products. It features a handle with a trigger, an extra handle for stability close to the chuck, and a plug-in cord to power the drill. The Milwaukee logo is located in the middle of the hand tool, right in front of the handle and trigger. The chuck, or tip of the rotary hammer that holds the bit, is completely black, matching the adjacent stability handle. This particular chuck offers a twelve-position adjustment mechanism that allows the user to secure the bit to the rotary hammer.
The chuck type and size are practically the only differences between the rotary hammer models offered by Milwaukee. This particular spline rotary hammer features a forward/reverse switch instead of the keyless chuck and variable speed offered in the SDS version. The hand tool is shaped and sized similarly to a traditional hand drill, being appropriately sized to produce a lot of force while remaining hand-operable. This rotary hammer also contains a switch that allows you to choose between the drill and hammer modes, which is located on the top of the device just above the handle.
