Background
Created in the late 90's and primarily used until the mid 2000's, the Respironics Tranquility Auto is a now-outdated automatically adjusting CPAP device. It was used to deliver air through the user's body during sleep to combat sleep apnea, featuring the ability to automatically adjust the pressure of the air released based on factors such as the patient's breathing habits and airway resistance.
This device is no longer purchasable and information on it scarce not only because it has been outdated and was replaced a long time ago, but also because the company that made them, Phillips Respironics, announced in 2024 that it is no longer manufacturing or selling hospital equipment, which of course includes CPAP devices like the Tranquility Auto.
Some of the superior models that replaced the Tranquility Auto over time are the Respironics Tranquility Bilevel, REMstar Auto M Series, DreamStation, and DreamStation 2.
The device does have known failures and recalls. The air blower motor can make loud scraping noises resulting from wear or damage. The air pressure delivered can be inaccurate due to tube blockages or improper calibration. The device can overheat because of dirty filters. It has recalls for an error detection issue, where the device will detect an error and completely shut down, posing significant health risks to the user. Inspections of these units also led to another recall, as it was found that contamination via small hairs, debris, and other small objects got into the airflow, posing danger to the user.
Identification
The Tranquility Auto visually appears as a bulky, white and light blue box. It shows the Respironics company name on the top and front, with the model name, 'auto', present on the front. Also on the front are two switches to control the device, and a 22mm socket to plug in the tube for delivering air. On the back is a socket for providing power to the device. Specific information such as the device's serial number is present on the bottom.
The Auto can be difficult to identify, as a very similar model, the Respironics Tranquility Bilevel, uses nearly the same box, the only difference being the Bilevel's box being gray where the Auto's is light blue.
