I did this for my Gen 1 (replaced a dead 5 GB with a 20 GB), but I cannot get ANYTHING (Windows, MAC, iTunes, Windows Explorer, etc) to recognize the device. I cannot install software or load music if I cannot get the darn thing to be recognized. HELP!!

You are using firewire connections? The 1st through 3rd gen require Firewire, 1st and 2nd do nothave USB support.
