The eMac was an all-in-one G4-based Mac designed for the education market and released in April 2002. It was the last Mac to use a CRT display and was sold at a low price to schools and other institutions.

What RAM does an eMac take?

I have an eMac with 1GB of RAM and want to increase it to 2GB (Thanks for the help here). What RAM does an eMac take? And where can I get it?

Mactracker says you need PC-2700 DDR333 184-pin SDRAM. It says that Apple says the max ram is 1 gig, but that the actual max is 2 gig.

I usually buy RAM from macsales.com -- here's the page with what looks like the memory for this model: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20W...

(Mactracker, by the way, is an awesome program -- it lists every Apple device with tons of tech specs: http://mactracker.dreamhosters.com/ )

Thanks, does that website have a British section? I have no way of paying in dollars.

Ah. Good question. I'd call them and see. They've always been helpful on the phone when I've called. And if you're calling from England, you could maybe keep it cheap by using Skype or something? They're based in Illinois, which is Central Standard Time, which I believe is six hours earlier than London.

To clarify this for others who stumble on this answer:

1) Older eMacs 1GHz + USB v1 and below use PC133 168pin RAM, with a max of 1GB (2x 512MB).

2) Newer model eMacs with USB2.0 and processor speeds greater than 1GHz (or the USB2.0 educational eMacs) run the PC2700 DDR333 RAM mentioned above.

I once had a refurb educational eMac that took different RAM from what any of my sources indicated. So be as thorough as you can in speccing the RAM. Check your Apple System Profile, and look it up on MacTracker and using the Other World configurator and see if they all agree.

I second the recommendation to check with Other World Computing about compatible memory for your Mac - in my experience their info is pretty reliable

I have two E-macs. One uses the PC133, the other DDR. Check your System Profile to see what Processor and Processor speed you have, that will determine the memory.

Also, I had a bad stick of memory that corrupted the OSX install due to repeated lockups and crashes. Once I figured out that it was the memory I had to wipe and reload. So be sure that the memory is spec'd for a Mac.

To the first poster who mentioned that the stated max is 1GB RAM but you can put 2GB, where'd you get that particular piece of information? I'm interested to know, as I'd like to do that for my DDR-loaded E-mac, if possible.

Tacking on to a six to seven month old question is not a good way to get an answer. You should start your own questions. Here's a link to your DDR Rams configuration:http://www.ramdirect.com/macs/eMacM9423....

DDR-based e-macs do support maximum 2GB of ram. Just use 2x1GB DDR1 sticks
