Power button doesn't work

The power button didn't work for 2 weeks, then it worked for a day, now doesn't work again. It will turn on if I plug it into a power source. But not with the button alone

Hi,

If it works with the charger connected but not on the battery alone, your battery might be failing. Have you tried to just charge the battery (don't turn on the Tab) for a few hours and then see if it works on the battery alone? If it doesn't or if it does but for only for a very short while your battery is faulty and will have to be replaced.

Hi @ Liz Sorondo,

Re post your "comment" as a new question on ifixit.

Give relevant details such as make and model number of the "phone" as what has happened to it and how long ago that it happened and what you have done to try an start it/fix it etc.

DO NOT attempt to turn on the "phone" as you can cause more damage if it has gotten wet.

if possible, remove the battery as well to minimze any further damage caused by getting wet.

The reason I'm telling you to do this is that you posted your "comment" in an answer to a question about a tablet which did not have a possible water damage problem.

Also your new question will get more attention as you have posted your "comment" in an answer to a question of more then 12 months ago, so not to many people will look and find it here

I know exactly what you are talking about on this. Does the button actually push in and click, or does it appear to be jammed down in there?

If it pushes in and is not working, it is most likely the button underneath that is soldered on the board has probably worked its way loose, or a circuit has gone out due to wear and tear, either way it would need to be resoldered, the worse case scenario is some kind of moisture or liquid damage. in which case it can still probably be fixed, its just a matter of what all is actually damaged.

If it is physically jammed, the button underneath on the board may still be damaged and may need to be resoldered, but more than likely its just stuck and needs to be opened up and reseated.

I hope this helps.

Please let me know if you open it up and are still unsure of the cause, and possibly attach some pictures of what you see.

The button will actually push down, just doesn't do anything. We took it to a electronics repair guy and he said he is scared to open it because he says it may fry something internally. I kind of just thought it may be the button out of place, since it does work sometimes. So I can open it up without causing problems?

I don't personally have one of these tablets but there are tons of videos and guides out there on how to open them properly so I wouldn't imagine you hurting anything. Here is a guide on iFixit for replacing a heatsink, but the opening instructions are all you really need from it. Let me know how it goes and if you still can't get it working.

Also, I would note the few ribbon cables attached to the rear housing. Make sure when you start to open it up, you don't pull too hard until you see which side has those ribbon cables attached, then you will want to open it up from the opposite side.

I know this is an old post, but our button just broke (May 2017), and it looked like it was jammed down in there. I too thought something had come unsoldered. It was the tactile switch on the motherboard with the button broken off of the switch itself. I replaced it and it is working again.

I called Nabi at 888-ASK-NABI, and they sent me a $40 coupon for any mattel item, and said the new dreamtab is at Walmart for $69... That's not a bad way to fix it... They also said the motherboard manufacturer is no longer in business, so they would not recommend repair.

However, I'm OCD and don't want a good electronic piece to go to waste. So I bought a new tactile switch for the motherboard behind the power button, and replaced it myself (had a friend do the soldering). Now it works great. Took me FOREVER to find the replacement part, so I thought I would share to those who are motivated to FIX their Dreamtab.

Steps to fix it, if you care:

1. If you're doing this, you'll want to buy PN 1571262-2, made by TE Connectivity, from www.mouser.com. You may want to wait until after step 4 and you've confirmed it's the switch. The part was $1.82 plus tax and shipping if you don't want to drive to pick it up.

2. Remove 6 screws from the back lego looking plate thing.

3. Remove 2 screws from underneath it.

4. using fingernail or plastic screwdriver, start prying back off. Be careful. There are 28 little tabs all the way around, and you don't want to break those. Jamming a screwdriver too far will damage electronics... Back comes off the front with nothing attached to it but gold foil.

5. Look at the motherboard (main green circuit board), near the corner where the Power button is (SW3). Most likely, there is a tactile switch with the head broken off (Cheap Chinese switch with no markings). It's the exact same switch that's on the volume buttons (SW1 and SW2), which probably aren't broken.

a. For a "jimmy-rig" fix, simply leave off the power/volume buttons, or cut off the power button from the volume buttons, from the chassis and reassemble. Use a small glasses screwdriver to stick in the little hole and push the button for power on/off. This is difficult to work with, and a child couldn't do it...so I don't recommend this "jimmy-rig".

b. For a good fix, you'll have to begin by removing all kapton tape, and disconnect the 14 micro-connectors from the motherboard, and remove the two screws holding the board to the chassis. Board should be free to hold and examine. you should see the 3 switches, and the power button will not have a head (button) on it.

NOTE: For the next part, I REALLY recommend a technical person who knows soldering to perform the actions...Take it to one of those phone repair shops. They can probably do it if paid by the hour.

6. Using a soldering iron, remove the broken switch(es).

7. Notice the old part will have two plastic guide nubs on the bottom. The new part (1571262-2) will not have these nubs, so the technician will have to eyeball the placement of the part to have the button exactly even with the two volume buttons.

8. Reattach Motherboard to all 14 connectors, make sure the buttons fit, and depress and hold the power button for a few seconds. It should power up.

9. After verifying it still works, power off.

10. Reassemble.

11. Give to your kid to break again, then buy the technical friend dinner or drinks!

I hope this helps.

Dave

Seems close to my problem, but too technical and too elaborate for a layman like me.
