Power on problem on 50D

Chat conversation start

20:43

Hi all,

When I place a fully charged BP-511A into my 50D, the blue light in the live view button lights up, even before I have closed the battery compartment door. When I closed this, the camera will not power up and the blue light in the live view button stays on. Sometimes the camera does power up and functions normally but the blue light in the live view button remains on, even after powering off.

I have cleaned all the contacts on my 2 batteries, the contacts in the battery compartment, replaced the CF card with a newly formatted one, cleaned the contacts on my lenses and the lens contacts on the camera body. I have also replaced the back up battery.

If anyone has had this problem, could they let me know the solution please. I would rather not go to a Canon repair centre as the cost would be beyond my limits.

Thanks for any info,

Thanks for that, I should have mentioned that the switch on the battery compartment, opposite the hinge, is working fine.

Thanks for taking the time to answer, I do appreciate, thank you.

@mak42 - another wild guess: have you tried reloading the firmware?

из

No I haven't tried that. I will be home tomorrow and will try it then and let you know.

Thanks man.

This is just a wild guess, but it might be worth a try.

All Canon DSLRs have a sensor switch on the battery door, that disables the camera when the battery door is open. On the 50D, this switch is in a small recess on the edge of the battery compartment opposite to the door hinge, easily visible when the door is open.

The switch may be stuck in the pushed-in position, maybe due to dust or dirt. This may lead to the camera not being powered up correctly when you insert the battery.

Try prodding the switch plunger with a toothpick or similar implement to see if it's stuck, and maybe add a tiny drop of contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol to aid in getting things moving again.

Flying Dutchman,

I feel like giving you a kiss (man to man, on the cheek, Chilean style, I am straight and married), actually two kisses, one on either cheek, your answer healed my headache, cured my incipient depression, and got me up flying again into life and the beauty of photography. I cannot be more grateful to you, man. Thanks, and thanks and thanks, and many thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love you man, may you live many years, have many children, and be blessed for life.

Hi...I had the same problem. It was all the CF card to blame. There is a reset procedure by which you open the battery slot, remove battery, open card slot, push out the card. Pause...Push back card and close battery, pause 2 sec, push in battery and close lid. All back to normal.

It was all due to a corrupt card...I repeated this over and over with my 8GB card and it never went bad again...The moment I put back the 4GB all symptoms reappeared..

that was it for me... no juice, changed all batteries, cleaned shutter by alcohol, dried, tried pause 2 sec, open/closed battery door - no luck. BUT just after i replaced 8 GB card by 32 GB (both via CF adapter) - it started to work. it even remembers my custom color settings to make non dull colors (move color left 4 points and up 3 points from center)

this worked!!!!! thanks

Hello all, This is Kiasto Filmmaker in South Africa. I think I got the problem. When I remove the 32G CF card & insert the battery without CF card the camera switches ON and says there's no card when I press Shutter button but when I put the same CF card back It doesn't switch on. I will consider getting another CF card.

First check the battery compartment door. There is a micro switch that turns the camera off when you open it. If the battery cover does not press down on the switch the camera won't go on. Make sure that the battery compartment door covers the batteries so that the micro switch senses that the cover is closed. Or you can also send your camera to repair center if it is under warranty or you implement other troubleshooting ideas from Canon 50d Manual to resolve this issue.
