Replacing the LCD cable

I recently took apart my iMac to replace my hard drive. After doing so my display wouldn't turn on but I could tell the Mac was working because I could hear the fans leading me to believe I had damaged the display connector.

After taking it off again I noticed I had broken it. So I went to Amazon and bought a new one for $26.

However I can't figure out how to place the connector in and I don't want to break it again. Please help

The larger end of the connector is placed on the LCD panel board. The white numbers you see on the cable will face towards you when you're plugging the cable into the LCD panel (so they would face the back of the iMac housing when installed). Your replacement cable does not have these white markings, however, so I'd overlay it to see what direction it needs to be plugged in. If you're looking at the back side of the display, it should look like this (the same way you have it in the pictures, just with the backside of the display behind it):

The display side of the connecter has two release clips on either side. Gently pinch the connector from the two furthest points and slide it in without using much force.

When you're going to put the screen back on the iMac and plug the smaller end of the cable into the logic board, it is essential you get the display as close to the computer as possible (smallest gap to work with unfortunately....), make sure the retaining clip is on the top of the connector so it can be pushed down after the cable is in place to secure it, and insert the cable parallel to the board. I would prop the display open with another person's hands or, I personally use a small box on either side. This is so you can use two hands, because trust me, it is easier to use two hands to work on the cable than one to balance the display open and one to push it into place. Clip the retaining bracket, and screw the display in and test. As long as you don't break a socket off the logic board, you will likely be in the clear afterwards.

Hello! the display side of the connector fits in perfectly with no problem.

But I'm still struggling with your explanation of the larger end.

It doesn't seem to fit in. (Note the plastic on the end of the connector was originally on the display but came off after a couple of failed attempts)

So, if I understand you correctly, part of the connector that was on the LCD came off with the original cable, and now the new one will not fit in? Can you take a picture of the end of the old and new connector side by side. Thanks

no the plastic end was originally on the LCD but came off with the new one.

I also changed the LCD cable ,installed the new one and now the LCD not working at all. Any help ? Thanks.

Hopefully not too late too comment…. That cable is a pain in the butt, i had the same issue. Broke the original cable and bought a new i tried on and the display was black removed the freaking thing 3 times. At the end i realized it wasnt seated on the monitor side ALL THE WAY. Take your time and make sure is in properly you will feel the small click when properly inserted.

Does the model number of LCD Cable matters? Because last time I ordered was 593-1280 and I didn’t notice there was “A” letter in the end of model number it’s “593-1280 A” I hope it will work now. 593-1280 and 593-1280 A is different

That picture is perfect. I was wondering how to secure the cable as it kept coming off when I moved the display.

if it moves, it's not properly seated. I think the easiest way to install this cable is to connect first the motherboard side, and then connect its end at the LCD.

Anyway, I have 3 2010 i3 iMacs with same problem: No image on internal screen, but ok on external. i'll stay over to see if there's any news

@m4k Hi Lance, I managed to find a common issue on this very model. L9000 tends to fail. To find it, you have to dig on the iMac inners as it is located under graphics card

Once you remove it, peel off a bit of the plastic sheet and look for the L9000. If it is as it seems to be, you will find it burned. I have 3 mid 2010 iMacs and all of them have L9000 burnt

Hola. Abrí mi IMac 21,5 late 2012 para cambiar el disco y ahora tengo una banda negra vertical de 7 cm a la izquierda, a unos 7cm del borde de la pantalla. Será que dañé parte de los Leds al despegarla? Alguien sabe si puedo repararla?
