What octane does the owner's manual specify? Knocking has nothing to do with the oil. Engine knock is uncontrolled detonation of the air/fuel mixture; what happens is that small explosions occur in various spots within the combustion chamber instead of one smooth expansion of the flame front. This can be caused by an inconsistent mixture of the air and fuel (improper fuel atomization, not enough turbulence of the entering air, etc), localized hot spots within the combustion chamber due to carbon buildup, running leaner than optimal, running too much timing, or often just not running high-enough octane fuel (octane is a measurement of a fuel's resistance to detonation).
