My grandson picked his phone up to use it and the home button was cracked. No drop Apple said we dropped it and have to pay 180.00 to get fixed. There is a problem with the phone.

Home buttons do not just crack. They either have to be dropped or something has to impact it it. Perhaps he had it in a backpack and something hard bumped it, especially if he dropped the backpack on the floor.

из

The button is sapphire while quite hard it can cleave (crack) if hit just right if the crystal has a flaw (just like a diamond). Looks like Apples QC is not catching these questionable buttons. Now the hard part proving it to Apple it was defective!

I’ve just had the same issue!!! i picked up my phone and the button has cracked. Ive not dropped this phone and it can’t be older than 6 months or so. There is very obviously an issue with the button. I’ve still got to go back to the store where I got it and complain.

из

Same issue. Never dropped the phone or bumped into it. May have pressed it hard because I am used to the 6. This should not be happening. They should replace the phone. It is obviously defective!!!

The Home Button is matched to the logic board so you cannot change it and retain Touch ID functionality. Additionally, starting with the iPhone 7 & up, the Home Button no longer as a mechanical actuator so you cannot even replace the HB with an aftermarket one because it will not do anything. Unfortunately, only Apple can repair this.

I see, if i change the HB with aftermarket, i can still use the phone as usual but no touch id.

If i want touch id works, i have to bring to apple?

из

An aftermarket HB will not have "click" function either...it's strictly cosmetic. Only Apple can replace your Home Button.

unfortunately, apple service center here in indonesia suggest me to exchange the unit with the price more than half price of the iphone.

Thanks for the reply

yup just more of the apple morons making their phones unrepairable except by apple for outrageous prices...............

My daughter was lying in her bed, phone in her hand. While I was talking to her, her iPhone 8 died. Then as none of the buttons worked, she handed it to me. Her home button was cracked. There is NO way she wouldn't have noticed this on her "precious" Even if she had dropped it, her case has a protruding front lip. You'd have to hit this with a nail and hammer to get a crack on the home button....

I chatted with an apple agent for 96 minutes, rebooting (unsuccessful) and then restoring the phone to discover, of course, that the home button didn't work. So then we went to the store. They repeated all that, and insisted that she dropped it. So, $169 later (they told me $149, but you pay tax too...), another 90 mins (took longer than they said to fix, hmmm ), she has her phone again, but I have had it. I've been reading many people complaining about this exact same issue. How could all these people have spontaneously cracking home buttons on their iPhone 8s without there being some fault with the phone?

There is definitely a design fault. I had my brand new phone for a few days and whilst charging it a crack appeared on the home button. Went back to the phone shop who refused to swap it and told me to go to the apple store. They said I need to pay £180. What a joke! I was livid

It depends on how they put the button in. The proper way it won’t get stuck on the lip. I almost made that mistake.

Today I picked up my phone and the button has cracked. I’ve not dropped this phone and it can’t be older than 6 months or so. There is very obviously an issue that needs to be addressed by Apple with the button. I completely rely on my phone for my business and all my personal banking etc. This is very frustrating and I don’t have the time to stand in the store all day whilst they make up excuses. I’ve still got to go back to the store where I got it and complain.

The same thing happened on my daughter's 8+. Had it on charge, took it off charge and rebooted then notification on screen to service home button then noticed crack on home button. Tesco want £371 to fix. Apple want £630!!! A 6 month old phone!! And since the new update, the phone has now frozen! Apple are a bunch of robbing gits! How can THEY prove it was damaged by human error??!!! As much as I can prove it wasn't. She is SO careful with her expensive phone and under no circumstance has she damaged it. So Apple/Tesco are calling my daughter a liar?! I refuse to pay for a manufacture fault.

We must wait until Apple’s press gathering Tuesday to learn the fate of the home button, Touch ID and other features on the brand-new iPhone 8, or whatever Apple ends up calling its latest flagship handset.

They should just patch it so that it is swappable. Its just a joke how much they charge!!

I think you're a bit late to the party...the iPhone 8 came out over a year ago and their latest "press gathering" for iPhones (which they called the iPhone Xs) was a month ago.

Since the home button’s touch ID is paired to the logic board, you cannot change it and expect the button to function as touch ID any more. It will work as a plain home button though. The initial question had to do with the home button being cracked, not the flex cable. In order to answer the question, you have to take a look at the question the way it was asked.

I repair iPhones on a regular basis. I see all forms of issues with these phones. If the crack is not interfering with anything, I would not change it, especially if it is just an aesthetics issue. The other alternative is to locate a logic board with a matching home button. That can generally be gotten relatively inexpensively by going to eBay and finding a phone 8 with a broken screen that is for sale. Then it would just take someone like me or another repair tech that knows how to change it out, to swap the screen over to the other phone. Hopefully, you have all your data, photos, etc., backed up to iCloud. There is no other way to keep the fingerprint reader alive. If you don’t mind putting in a pin code to open the phone, you can just have the button replaced and be off and running. That would be the least expensive way to effect the repair.
