The late 2005 Power Mac G5 was introduced in October, and discontinued in August the next year. There were three configuration options, one dual core processor at 2.0 GHz, one dual core at 2.3 GHz with model number A1177, and one dual core dual processor (quad core) at 2.5 GHz.

Something strange with boot

In a nutshell: I bought a Power Mac G5, I believe 2.3 GHz. 160 HDD, with 8 GB of RAM.

I got it at a thrift store. Password locked on screen. Couldn't boot single user, from external, nothing. Also reseting PRAM was a failure.

Thought well I have TransMac software and USB drives.

From a Windows system I booted up the system. Under Windows CMD I cleaned & converted as well as created a primary partition in GPT instead of MBR.

Restored an image of OS-X Lion onto a thumb drive. I then reformatted the HDD. (I'm at the library and writing this I realized I did not clean the original HDD. Will test when I get home but in case imma finish).

Now I get the ? Folder when booting without thumb drive in. And with it I just get a black screen, the fans get moving about 45 seconds in.

I know there are no BIOS. If cleaning HDD doesn't work what am I missing?

Here's your systems specs: G5 Dual Core (PowerMac7,3) Dual 2.3 GHz PowerPC 970MP

This is not an Intel model. I had one before Apple switched to Intel.

OK so I fixed it, what I did was used transmac on windows to format and restore the disc image of the install dvd onto a external hdd and then used it as an internal to install the os.

Please post a picture of the lock. There are password locks, firmware locks, EFI locks, iCloud locks and it makes a great deal of difference.

thats cool not really a mac person an no need to remove the processor o reinstall the os, truly off top;ic i am herre for the boot issue, no the processor an i know its not the processor as i had previously booted just fine. the only issue i have now is finding the install,s i am not the original owner apple wont help me plus its obsolete in their eyes, but those on ebay pay up to 350 for this computer an i am just reselling it so no need to start petty argument over something so trivial and not important to the main subject.

i had to split the download from mega, as its over the 5gb free limit got a little time left ill keep yall posted

So. No go on booting from USB. Goes to black screen and fans full power. No key combination works, nothing. I have one more idea and that's using vmbox to run mac and install itself on a hard drive and insert it or make bootable USB on there.

You are using to much PC lingo for me. The drive need to be formatted Apple Partition Map.

Alright. So have a burned copy of macos x lion. Managed to get to open firmware, holding power when turning on for a whole gets me the terminal. How would I go about loading the OS install. It says load too small or can't open. Both from disc and USB. But paragon shows the USB is valid. Also when using a USB with transmac when expanded and restored it'll boot to the question mark folder screen. But just restoring it to USB it stays on black screen and fans go full power. It's this meaning one of the USB is being read and just can't boot, or corrupt file? Reason I can't use keyboard commands is I think my keyboard isn't recognized at time of boot. It's a aimoo, weird keyboard with old ipod charger slot.

I do have a few fire wire pci cards I could slap in my PC, could i possibly install the macos dmg this way? Can mac and PC interact with fire wire?

We for starters Lion 10.7.x is not supported on your system the highest you can install is Leopard 10.5.x

I think you'll need to just bite the bullet here and get a real copy of the retail copy of the Leopard 10.5.x CD or DVD.

firstly if it’s just normal account password the process below would be useful

first insert the flash drive you loaded the external OS on

press the alt Botton at start up navigate with the left and right arrow keys while square gray box is on macintosh HD press cntr + s “not command” you should see the downward facing sign benit Macintosh HD change to a sign that looks like repeat sign in media players click return

then restart with the soft key if you get to the password screen or just hard reset and while restarting try booting to safe mode again command+s

type in

  1. mount "space" -uw "space" / (then return)

# rm "space"/var/db/”no space”.applesetupdone(then return)

  1. reboot (then return)
  2. press return on your keyboard
  3. should look like this
    1. mount -uw /(then return)
    2. rm /var/db/.applesetupdone(then return)
    3. reboot(then return)
    4. Mac will restart normal and go blank to a greyish colour for about a minute or two be patient
    5. you will be presented with a welcome screen to create a new administrator account and bonus the previous data on the other accounts will still be there if you haven’t wiped the SSD OR Hard drive
    6. you should be able to use your Mac like normal
    7. NOTE !!! this is most likely to work on OS X El Capitan or higher can’t actually say about older Mac OS version before that

Actual i do believe this is an Intel processor.

To answer everyone.

Its not Icloud, booted to password screen like a login. I couldn't do anything that was suggested, I already reformatted. Forgot the gpt partition, waiting on that now. I dont have install disc, original or otherwise. I have osx lion on a flash drive, used transmac, this is notable and gpt. I will update when I finish the install.
