SONOS PLAY 5 is the original, bigger room, bigger sound, all-in-one Sonos music player.

Upgrading of, memory or processor, possible?

Is it possible to upgrade the memory or processor in a Sonos Play 5 Gen1?

I just received an email from Sonos saying,

End of software updates

In May, the following products in your system will be classified as legacy and no longer receive software updates and new features. This will affect your listening experience.

Legacy products were introduced between 2005 and 2011 and, given the age of the technology, do not have enough memory or processing power to sustain future innovation.

Please note that because Sonos is a system, all products operate on the same software. If modern products remain connected to legacy products after May, they also will not receive software updates and new features.

this seems very wasteful, (sending millions of speakers worldwide to landfill), to me as I have several of these speakers and they all work fine.

I spent a couple of thousand on these speakers, “they work perfectly”, and do not want to spend more money and send these to landfill.

Thanks

You do NOT have to throw away your speakers, you just won’t be able to get new features. Whatever works now as a feature will still work.

Not true. If Spotify (or whatever you are using for Music provider) upgrades its platform, it may no longer support your Sonos system that is not running the latest updates. If this happens, and it surely will, you will not be able to play music on your entire Sonos system, unless you remove the legacy devices and install the Sonos updates. At that point, your legacy devices are useless. They are effectively bricked.

Not, not true! Here we are over 1-½ years later and my gen 1 play 5s still work with Apple Music. As long as the Sonos S1 app works it should work. No one is making their platform to only work with Sonos.
