The Amazon Echo Spot is a semi-spherical Echo product with a screen released in September 2017 as part of Amazon's Echo line of smart speakers.

Why is my echo spot flickering?

When I got my echo spot I really liked it but then for some reason it started flickering and I tried everything. Dimming the display, getting a new power supply and factory resetting it. So I really hope someone can come up with an answer for it.

I'm not sure how many people still use their echo spot. Mine started flickering and most of the comments about it were fairly old... Nothing worked on mine until I contacted Amazon and all I had to do was click on that I wanted them to call me and they fixed it just like that. It kinda creeps me out that they were able to do it over the phone perse, but at least it's fixed. Just wanted to post it so if anyone choses to, they can go to help on their echo, click on contact Amazon, follow the directions for them to call you, and TADA!!! they are able to fix it.

ΠΈΠ·

@Ami Morris Ami, that worked! I did as you said didn't even answer the phone and it fixed it, very weird. Thanks for the info!

ΠΈΠ·

LOL. Crismac is obviously being sarcastic. The first answer from Ami Morris is obviously BS. No wait, I take it back! Mine got fixed when I just thought about calling Amazon support. Once I did the flickering stopped. LOL

I was ready to toss the spot--though it's one of my favorite Alexa devices. Driving me nuts, the screen flicker. Hard reset, moving to a new location, just couldn't fix it.

Β

SOLUTION FOR MY FLICKERING SPOT:Β Before I tossed it, I thought I'd try the power supply for from the Echo Show I have in the Kitchen. Not expecting much, I plugged it in. And what do you know! No flickering, even at the brightest level! So the obvious take away is that the power supply or cable are bad. But I swapped the power supply with the Echo Show (hard to keep all the echo products straight), and it booted right up, no flickering. So everything is working, except I have a black power supply for the white spot, and a white (found out these two words together are banned--appropriately) power supply for the black Show

Holy sh*t, this worked. I got a new spot from amazon, plugged it into my flickering device and it worked perfectly! Well done!

ΠΈΠ·

I found out mine did not flicker when plugged into a surge protector, but did flicker when plugged into an extension cord. I would agree - issue may be something related to power supply.

ΠΈΠ·

What version of the Echo Show cord did you use?

ΠΈΠ·

Tried this with an echo show 5 white power supply and it did NOT work.

FIXED! I had this same problem with my Spot and tried resetting, etc. several times. The problem always came back. I think some kind of charge builds up in the capacitor due to the display screen being always on, month after month. Whatever the reason, I found my solution by accident. I sleep with the spot on a shelf near the head of my bed. Sometimes even the low light from the time display would annoy me (even more so when it was jittering! I was mad at the thing and didn't even want to look at it.). So I simply told Alexa to "turn off the display". The lights go off and the Spot display goes dark. The next time I ask the Spot a question (like: "Alexa, what time is it?), the display comes back on. I frequently do this overnight and have noticed that I have not seen a screen jitter since I started. Even if I don't do it for weeks. So maybe, like I mentioned earlier, something just builds up from the display being on all the time. Who knew it could be cured with a little rest now and again? Loving my Spot again! Hope this helps others. Give it a try and please report back to see if this fix is more than just anecdotal. Thanks!

This method worked.

ΠΈΠ·

This has worked for me too. The trick seems to be to leave the screen off for several hours - I did this for about 10 hours. When the display came back, the image still flickered but then over the next 5 minutes the display gradually came back into focus. It stayed that way for the next 3 of 4 weeks before the flickering returned bug the fix worked again. So it's not a permanent fix but seems to be a repeatable one.

ΠΈΠ·

Yes it worked for me too!! Thank you very much!

ΠΈΠ·

Yes this works. The only negative is if you want to see the time in the middle of the night, you can't because it's turned off.

ΠΈΠ·

A couple years late to the party but wanted to +1 this solution. Have had echo devices for 7+ years now and the Spot, despite its flaws is my favorite device. After reading the discussion here I decided to put the Spot on a smart plug and turn it off for a couple hours each night. Over the course of a few days of doing this the flickering has gone away completely and haven't seen it since.

Previously I also replaced the power supply and had luck with that for a few months as well but the issue eventually came back. I think the "giving it rest" solution seems to be the best. So happy I didn't trade this thing in for another POS Show 5.

There is no permanent fix for this problem. I would contact Amazon or whoever you purchased it from and ask for an exchange or refund. There are thousands of people experiencing the same problem with this device.

This is a hardware problem and this is why Amazon has discontinued the product. I called Amazon and they asked me to purchase an Echo 5 and refunded it right away, not sure why the process is such but you get a replacement anyway.

My screen no longer flickers. It took less than a minute to fix. I picked it up and threw against a brick wall. (Ta -da no more flickering)

ΠΈΠ·

I think a number of people have tried that. Like I say below if you get four years out of it for $50 it was almost worth it.

The latest fix is this: Do factory reset. After that check for updates in the settings and then download those. I did it twice to make sure it took and that fixed it for me. The factory reset is required so that the latest updates become available. Good luck.

UPDATE: A day later and it's flickering again. Next I tried the Echo Show power supply suggestion from a brand new Echo Show 5 and it did NOT fix the issue. The only other 'fix' I will try is asking Alexa to turn off the display each night when I go to bed and then turn it back on in the morning. That worked for me!

Hey Albert and everyone, thanks for the help but I did throw it away this morning after I factory reset again to erase info.

I bought this years ago. After months of fighting it, changing brightness, calling support, rebooting, etc, etc I have had enough.

Sometimes, when the screen of your Echo Spot is high on brightness, it may start flickering. ... Go to your Echo Spot settings and lower the scale of brightness. As you set the brightness of your device to a low level, you would see the flickering disappearing. Also, turn off the adaptive brightness option (if included)

3-6-22 I simply disconnected the device from the power cord, then disconnected the power cord from the AC outlet (in this case, a power strip). Left everything alone for about 12 hours, then plugged everything in again. Voila! Flickering solved for now.
