blows fuse when trying to crank
When I try and crank the engine the 40 amp fuse for the crank blows immediately

You have a short circuit. Disconnect the solenoid wire for the starter and try cranking again. Of course the engine will not crank but if the fuse does not blow then you need a new solenoid. If the fuse still blows the short is in the wiring. Inspect and repair as required.
