The GPS fails to turn on. Did a software update date last month and things started to go south after that. Replaced the batteries and cleaned the contacts which made no difference. To see if the unit had power I switched my eTrex 22X screen with my eTrex 20 screen. It showed that it was receiving power showing a white screen.

This sounds like an error during the update. Can you repeat the update installation or even install a newer version? Perhaps an error has crept in.
