The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), or simply the Super Nintendo, is a 16bit gaming console released by Nintendo in 1990. The Super Nintendo was one of the best sellers of its time and still has a large fanbase today.

Why does my controller work with only 1 game?

So my SNES will play NCAA basketball just fine on any controller i have. but i put in anything else, the controller only partially works or just the buttons and not the d-pad. for example i put in Super Playaction football and only the A button works. But i put back in NCAA basketball the controller works just fine all buttons and dpad. so i know the controller cant be the cuprit. Any help on this as i love my SNES and want to be able to play it would be super appreciated!

Hi!

First thing to do is to check the controller port assembly. Please clean it and check for damage. Now, it’s possible that it’s not the controller, but if possible, please check if another controller do work. Just to be sure… also clean the game cartridge slot throughly to check if this one is causing issues..

Please let us know how it goes!

If none of this worked at all, it could be something on the motherboard.. please check that one and also check the IC’s and caps..

I'm not sure how to check those. I know what the caps are I don't know what the ics are. But the fact it does play one game ok with no issues how would caps and ics affect this? I'm trying to understand. Ty for your help!

@kywildwolf76 it could be that a component failed on the motherboard causing this. Maybe that game is not using a particular component. You can check with the multimeter if they are fine or not. Please let us know if you need some more info!
