Repair guides and disassembly information for the fourth-generation Mac Pro, released in December of 2019.

Blower Exhaust Fan Inoperable

My Mac Pro 2019 exhaust blower fan does not operate anymore.. It started as noticing that the front system fans (the 3 fan stack) were running more often than usual. In Macs Fan Control, the RPM then started reading 0 RPM on the Exhaust fan and I cannot control the speed through Macs Fan Control. Then recently (after the service I will mention), the blower fan makes some bad grinding noises on boot, only to turn off and stay off.

I had this machine in Apple Green Hills Nashville for service, where they said they replaced the blower assembly with a new one, but the fan still did not spin. They wanted to do more work on it, but it would be $1300 and more time, which I declined.

I'm posting this simply because I have yet to see anyone with this same issue on the internet. I have ordered a used blower assembly from eBay to see if I can get a different result than my local Apple techs.

I'm currently running Monterey 12.7.5 and will probably be upgrading the computer if replacing the assembly does not fix the issue. I'm hoping a firmware update might help me.

I will update this thread as I try and resolve this issue.

This system has gang of three fans in the front and one within the power supply. Which fan are you having issues with?

@mattrausch you most likely do not need a part number for the blower fan (you've already ordered one ;-) but just in case, it is Apple part number 923-03328 and available at many places. Let us know what happens when you install the new blower. The things you do want to check are the contact springs. Make sure they line up etc. and are not damaged or not properly seated from the previous service.

@oldturkey03 This is tremendous info, thank you so much. I had seen a part no for the M Series Mac Pro (923-08647), but I didn’t see the Intel part number available anywhere before your comment!

@mattrausch glad I could help. Just keep us informed once you get your new fan. I really hope it is the fan and nothing worse :-)

I took a look around the parts houses to see if I could find a spare Blower Fan which is what your image shows. This is the cheapest I could find but they are out of stock. Hopefully the Fan you ordered works.

Sadly, you’ll need to contact Apple locally to see if they are willing to sell your the fan unit or you’ll need to bring it in to them.

Hi thanks for replying - I was able to source a used fan assembly via eBay for around $60 USD (it just arrived and will update this thread with my findings when I can attempt the replacement).

As for Apple, I had it in for service where I’m told they replaced the fan assembly but it did not resolve the issue (new fan wouldn’t spin either). They quoted the continuation of service out of warranty for $1300 and more time in the shop, which I declined due to needing the machine for a deadline. I may need to go back if my self repair doesn’t resolve the issue.

My replacement assembly failed as well, same result as the Genius Bar. Fresh install of Sonoma did not result in anything other than 0 RPM on the blower.. the fan is really for the power supply, so hoping I don't burn that out. Ugh, what a great $10,000 computer.

@mattrausch - did you check the lines to the fan? Could there be a break in one of them or a bad connector interface.

из

Yes - the Mac Pro has pogo pins that connect the fan to a "header" on the backside of the motherboard... It's quite a silly overly engineered solution imo. From all indications, as I can't assess whether the pins are connected while the fan is in place, it is normal. The contacts were cleaned on both the header and fan with some isopropyl alcohol to make sure connection was as successful as it could be.
