Since 1996, all cars in the US are required to support something called On Board Diagnostics, version 2, better known as OBD-II. This is a standard calling for a common connector on all cars with a communication protocol to allow information to be read regarding important systems in the car. The OBD-II connector is required to be located in the driver's compartment where you can plug in a code reader to download the Diagnostic Trouble Codes, or DTCs that tell you what the error is.
Without the code reader, the only way most cars have to notify you that there's a problem is to turn on that yellow "check engine" light, which is more properly termed the MIL, or Malfunction Indicator Light in OBD-II parlance. All you can tell from the light being on is that the engine or transmission computer has detected a problem; there is nothing to tell you how serious the problem is, which could range anywhere from a loose gas cap to imminent and catastrophic engine failure.
So yes, Harry is exactly right that your next step is to find out what the computer is trying to tell you by getting your codes scanned. Here in the US, most auto parts stores will hook up their scanner to your car for free and give you a readout of the trouble code(s) they find. Given that, you can then look them up online and figure out what the most likely fix is. There are also small bluetooth adapters that you can plug into the OBD-II port and read with a free app on your phone; those can be had online for sometimes as low as $5 USD. Of course, there are also consumer and professional grade dedicated readers that can be purchased anywhere from about $25 to several thousand.
Anyway, however you do it, you'll need to find out what DTCs are being indicated for your car. Once you have them, come on back and add that information to your question and we can help you figure out what you'll need to do to fix it.

I will add to the two excellent replies to fully answer your question. As already mentioned, when you have the "check engine" light on in your Saab could mean a few things depending on its year/model. Older Saabs (I believe in the mid 1990s), the light will come on and stay on; newer models, it could stay on OR flash. If it stays on and is not flashing its a warning that there is an issue and should be dealt with as soon as you can. Now if it's flashing, it's more serious, and your car may go into "limp" mode, where your car will not go past 40mph leting you know it needs immediate attention to the fault, allowing you to drive the vehicle to a shop.
As for diagnostic readers, if you have an OBD reader, it may not give you all the codes. This is because Saab created their own tool called the Tech-2, which is the only tool used to fully allow diagnostics and adjustments while being connected to the vehicle. This is what the Tech 2 looks like:
Now, with Saab no longer being made since it went out of business in 2011, the Tech 2 has never been updated, and the software to run it is ancient to today's standards, requiring specific memory cards called BIN files and Windows XP as its connection for security and downloads. I won't go on any further as this is just touching the bucket. If you want to learn more about the Tech 2, have a look at this link here from Wiki.
I own 3 Saabs and love them, owning a Tech 2 gives me the ability to adjust pretty much anything in the car, such as coding new keys, to adjustments in the Saab's main computer, the ECU, and doing full diagnostics. Hope this explanation, in addition to the others help you! love, and long live the Saab!

Hi,
The easiest & fastest way to find the cause is to connect an OBED code reader to the vehicle.
If you have no experience with this then you need to find a mechanic or person who does.
The code reader will help to pin point which area of the vehicle is in fault or failure.
Hope this helps
