Repair guides and disassembly information for the 16-inch MacBook Pro released in October of 2021, featuring Apple-designed M1 Pro and M1 Max SoCs. Model A2485.

Keyboard backlighting not working

Symptoms - White Keyboard backlighting doesn't work. Occurred after liquid entered left side of device when closed (side with MagSafe port). All ports work, key strokes work, CAPS LOCK LED WORKS, everything works other than white backlight.

Troubleshooting steps - I've basically done everything software wise, so I know it's hardware. Chat GPT seems to believe it's the backlight fuse that may have blown due to liquid entering.

Anyone have a hunch on what's happening? I know liquid is difficult, as I've actually worked at an Apple Store as a technician. This was a used purchase and I'd rather not spend a whole lot fixing it, but I'd like the backlight to work.

I do not have soldering equipment or a microscope, but I'm comfortable disassembling and stuff at home (I've replaced thousands of phone batteries and displays, and I build computers as a hobby). Thanks!

The backlight for the keyboard that lights up the keys or the backlight of the display?

A blown backlight fuse is one possibility, but before you travel that road let's doublecheck. Grab a USB keyboard and mouse and an external monitor. With everything plugged in restart the system and closed the display (Clamshell Mode) does the external work? If not you have deeper issues than the internal display backlight.

The keyboard backlighting, not the display backlighting. Sorry, I thought I specified in the post. Thank you!

@gabrielconner - Well that does change things! Liquid spills within the keyboard tend to be messy repairs as the keyboard backlight is a string of tiny LED'S held in a frame to illuminate the keys area. So a corroded out joint within it could be the failure or the ribbon cable which connects to the logic board.

Do you have access to an Ohm (DVM) meter to measure the ribbon cable? You'll need to open the system up to gain access to the connection and then carefully disconnect the ribbon cable to measure its continuity and resistance.
