Hi

I'm have iMac 27 2011 i5 3.1GHz

Hi has Radeon 6970m.

I would like to improve its graphics card.

I was thinking about the GTX 780m.

What with efi? Do I need to upgrade to imac 2012 efi?

It will be working?

My iMac has SSD hard drive and I'm have a lot of space for graphics card.

on the internet I found some pictures:

Hey Adrian,

I found the thread on MacRumors that you pulled those pictures from. GMacUser was able to upgrade to a 680m, and it seems to have worked pretty well for him. However, a 680m MXM is $500-600 online, and a 780m MXM is even more. Additionally, it looks like the 780m that you want to upgrade to is going to take a lot more work to get up and running correctly. The 680m also has a higher TDP (thermal design power), which means more heat inside your iMac. In my opinion, this really isn't a cost-effective upgrade because the performance increase you'll get won't really justify the time and money spent on it.

Hey, i DID an upgrade to a GTX 780M with 4 GB RAM on an iMac 27" 2010.

Installation was moderate and the performance gain is huge. But take care, you'll probably will lost your boot screen. Set your OS environment up before installing the card to your iMac.

hey can you tell us what brand of graphic card have you bought? And apart from opening ur iMac and installing the new gfx, is there any firmware job required? (I already upgraded my late2009 imac with the 6970m but nowadays games suck up too much power :(

Thanks!!

Sure i can. I bought the card from eBay and the seller said he pulled the graphics card right out a brand new Clevo laptop. The card is also compatible to MSI and Alienware. So, if you want to buy a card, look for these three manufactures to be compatible with.

Also I have to flash the Video BIOS to get full clock rates. Before the flash, my card was stucking at 400 MHz core clock. Now the beast is unleashed.

If you need some help, don't bother to send me a message.

Florian:

how is this GTX running for you a year later?

How do you flash the bios on the video card?

I'm looking at Alienware gtx780 cards that have 4gb video memory. Thoughts?

I'm also looking at the GTX 980 with 8gb video memory. Will those work?

Hello. Do you think is possible to install a NVIDIA GTX 980M on an iMac 27 MID 2011? I found this one: http://www.materiel.net/accessoire-pour-...

Hi my friends,

Just to save you some time here! My dream is over...

Was going down the Nvidia road on a late 2009 27"Core 2 Duo system using the web-drivers for gtx660m2gb - replacing a 256 MB ATI card.

Well... it was kind of working, nice fast clock speed. Download the latest Nvidia drivers before you change your card. Thanks Jason for that tip!

It boots... but thats it for good news. No 2nd monitor available via cdmi using miniDisplay port, no brightness control on the main screen either. It does boosts the energy consumption of the system to double. It's getting hot in here! Also lost my e-SATA connection to a 2nd external hard drive... aaargggg.

The worst thing was after updating to Sierra the "new" system starts with the OS-X GPU drivers by default. Which leaves your in unsupported GPU in the dark so you don't have a working screen whatsoever. Have fun working with a black screen and no means to access a 2nd screen.

So for me this is a dead end my sport friends. Without a proper firmware code on your GPU & system, this is a no go! Quite a pity.

I wanted to render stuff on this machine. If somebody needs a working Nvidia GTX 660m/2gb- or has a working one pulled from a iMac card 2gb+ please let me know.

Cheers my brave friends, m
