Asus Zenbook UX31A

The Asus Zenbook UX31A is a laptop released in June of 2012. It is a member of Asus's Ultrabook line. It features a 3rd generation Intel Core I7 processor and a full HD IPS Display.

Zenbook UX31 Screen Flicker

Hello,

I have really bad screen flickering happening on my UX31A. I opened the BIOS and it is still happening there. I am attempting an update to the newest operating system, but I fear that it will not work. Here is a link to a movie I took of the screen.

Would somebody confirm that this is a Motherboard issue? Does anyone know what the fix might be?

Hi,

Try connecting an external monitor and check whether its' display is also flickering.

If if doesn't, then it might not be a problem with the GPU but possibly could be either:

1. faulty video cable between motherboard and screen (press around the screen 'hinges' area (this is where the cable passes through from the body to the lid) and see if you can make it better or worse.

2. faulty video cable connection either on the motherboard or on the screen.

3. faulty backlight power supply feed or lid sensor when the lid is closed or opened a signal is sent to the relevant section on the motherboard which sends a signal to the screen to software turn on / turn off the backlighting.

4. faulty LCD screen

If it does, then there is a problem with the GPU on the motherboard.

Thanks for your response. When connected to an External Display through a USB port, the screen does not flicker.

Based on your previous steps, should I take the computer apart and try reconnecting all of the cables? Do you think it's just a connection issue, or is it possible a part that needs to be replaced?

Hi @dylanchernick ,

It would seem the best approach.

It still could be a fractured cable around the hinge area also. Does it alter if you move the lid back and forth?

If it is still faulty after reseating the cables (at both ends- try the motherboard end first and see if it fixes it - as it most probably is the easiest to access) and proving that the cable itself is OK then perhaps you'll have to get more 'technical' to determine where the problem is and if a part will have to be replaced.

In the interim, if an external monitor works OK, updating should not be a problem, as the fault is with the 'display' not the GPU.

Also I assume that you meant to say HDMI port instead of USB for the external monitor connection ;-)

Hi Jayeff,

No, the Mini (Micro?) HDMI port was damaged internally (somebody tried to push an adapter with too much force) and will not work so I purchased a USB to HDMI adapter to connect to external displays.

I already reseated the main display cable at the motherboard. By 'other-end' do you mean the end inside the display itself? I didn't want to take apart the screen as it is taped together and is a delicate procedure but that sounds like the next step.

Yes.

As reseating the motherboard end of the video cable didn't resolve it, I'm afraid that you'll have to try the other end, if only to prove whether it is the problem or not.

Don't know your laptop but by 'tapping' on it at various placing, can you affect the flickering? I mean such as near the power button (on some laptops the lid switch is part of the power button assembly, with the magnet in the lid positioned above it, when closed - usually low down on the bottom of the lid area.) or on the back of the lid itself, check the video to determine the location of the screen connector.

Just some thoughts

For me the issue was a dockingstation (I have UtechSmart 1:12 usb-c to outputs) this probably limited the amount of energy the display could get and caused the flickering. My problem still is that I can’t use 3rd monitor without my dockingstation as my laptop doesn’t have enough ports.

I guess my main lesson is make sure you are not overextending any one input. In my case is was the usb 3 thunderbolt port which I tried to connect too much too via the dockingstation
