HDMI port cannot be found on computer

My HDMI connection was working then all of a sudden it just stopped. Bought a new TV thinking it was the TV - wasn’t. Noticed my computer doesn’t show an HDMI port at all on my computer. How can I get this port back again? Tried running BIOS and having an error on that as well.

Hi @dell580 ,

The HDMI port is part of the video system (in your case onboard video, unless you have a video card installed as well and are using that instead) and it doesn't appear in Device Manager.

Video should be available on both the vga port and the HDMI port of the computer.

Is there an error symbol, either a yellow exclamation mark or a red cross, against the display adaptor entry in Device Manager at all?

What is your setup, i.e. is there a monitor connected to the computer as well as a TV?

What problems are are having with BIOS?

Can you access BIOS by pressing F2 during POST?

What OS is installed in the computer?

Update your bios firmware and check updates for video/display adapters in device manager section install them and check updates for the windows and try to perform soft reset for your computer

Amily Grey - When i try to run the BIOS is says there is a Parameter Error - i dont know what that is. My computer and WIndows are up to date.

Jayeff - this newer TV does not have a VGA port. I used the VGA port on my older TV after the HDMI ports stopped working. Thought it was the TV hence the newer TV. No error symbol against the display adaptor.

No the monitor is not connected at the same time as the TV. Tried running the BIOS which needs to be updated per my computer is says there is Parameter error. Windows 10 Pro is what is now running onmy computer.

It seems you need to fix the “parameter error” that the BIOS is reporting. I suggest you reset the BIOS by clearing the CMOS. This YouTube video will get you started. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9RnIj-E...

At startup, you should see the BIOS self test results or Dell logo with HDMI. If you don’t see anything at boot before Windows loads, it’s not a Windows problem and a flaw might have developed with the HDMI circuitry on the motherboard. You might look into an add-on card with an HDMI port.

Other answers have adequately addressed the problem as a Windows issue.

Hi @dell580 ,

What BIOS version is currently installed?

According to the Dell support page for your model, the latest BIOS version is A07 which was released in 2012.

If you already have this version installed and are getting an error message it may be a conflict between the OS and the BIOS.

Dell does not offer driver support for Win 10 for your model. It only offers driver support for Win Vista and Win 7

Has the HDMI port ever worked in your computer with Win 10 Pro?

If it has worked before in Win 10 Pro, then perhaps a Win 10 update is the cause of it not working now. See if you can recall when the problem first started and then check in Settings > Update and Security > Windows Update > view Update History and see if there was an update about the same time that the problem started. If so, uninstall the update (click on uninstall updates and select the required update) follow the prompts and then restart the computer and check if it has resolved the problem.

If it has resolved the problem then the only problem now is that Windows will reinstall the update again the next time it looks for updates. You are fortunate that you have Win 10 Pro because you can prevent updates from occurring so you have a little more choice. The downside to this is that your computer may be less secure in the future unless you manually update. Here’s a link that explains it better than I can.

If has never worked in Win 10 Pro then perhaps it is a compatibility problem between Win 10 and the BIOS.

You could always check the display adaptor manufacturer’s website (check in Device Manager for make and model of display adaptor) to see if they have Win 10 drivers available for that exact model display adaptor and see if that works. There is no guarantee that this will work as computer manufacturers sometimes modify the display adaptor and the drivers to suit their particular motherboard requirements, but it is worth a try.
