How to flash firmware on ipad?

The ipad is stuck at recovery mode whenever i try to recover with itunes- progress bar does not move. It has been suggested a firmware flash is needed, but the software I have seen requires payment. Are there free software to flash firmware? Or am i using the right method?

You are using the right method. I suggest trying to re-install iTunes first if that does not help then try 3UTools with the repair driver method shown in the program.
