Freezer Fan Icing Up

Samsung Refrigerator model RF4287HARS. At first the ice maker stopped working, I tried resetting then just replaced it. That didn’t do anything so I just gave up on ice and still had water. Then about a month later a loud noise started from the freezer fan. I left it go and 2 months later food started defrosting and at the same time a terrible moldy oder appeared that I could not get rid of. At the time I assumed it was the compressor so I bought a new fridge and stuck this one downstairs. After a few weeks of it airing and draining out (lots of water drained out), I decided to plug it back in. Oder and noise was gone and it worked fine for 4 months with no water hooked up. Now I’m back to ice around the fan with insufficient freezing and the noise. Does anyone know what the fix is other then defrosting it again? I’m not willing to put more the $500 into this, it may be going to the curb soon.

Hi,

Appears as though there may be a defrost problem.

This could be caused by a faulty defrost heater, faulty defrost sensor, blocked drain leading from under the evaporator unit in the freezer to the evaporator pan under the compartments or perhaps a faulty control board.

Here’s the troubleshooting section of the service manual. This will hopefully give an error indication which will tell you what the problem is, when you run the refrigerator in test mode.

I have the same problem. I won't put any money into this as mine is 8 yrs old. I unplug the fridge and take out all the shelves. I take a hair dryer to the back panel and unscrew it. remove carefully the panel to the side and use hairdryer to melt the ice. Put it back and wait for the next time the fan makes noise. Sometimes it can be a month or two others 3 weeks. Cheaper than a new fridge for now.

Hi @lucy80368,

Most refrigerators have a 15+ years lifespan, so it may be better to find out what the problem is now e.g. defrost heater, sensor etc and get it fixed as you may be doing your "fix" for a long time

Just my view.

What is the model number of your refrigerator?

Yep my whirlpool has this issue also. When the fridge was still under warranty I had the repair people out here 3 different times and they never fixed it. Now it’s out of warranty and still freezes up. Have to take the back panel off the freezer and defrost the fan about once a month. I usually know when it’s about time to do it because the ice maker slows down on making ice.
